Just as a bit of additional information, his date of death is 18/12/1914 and is listed on the CWGC site as James Thomas ORMEROD.

The Register of Soldier's Effects lists his father as John Thomas.

Do you know if there is a link to Liverpool or could we be searching the wrong place?

Having looked at the Liverpool censuses, I have had difficulty in believing this was a Liverpool man.

The medal roll shows that this soldier was at first in 3rd Battalion, Border Regiment. This was part of the reserve and at the outbreak of war was at Carlisle, then moved to Shoeburyness. It did not go to France.
It seems likely that Ormerod/Omerod was a regular soldier, as he was posted from 3rd to the 2nd Battalion which was in Belgium during October 1914 - too soon for him to be trained from scratch and he may have been in a draft sent across after the main battalion's embarkation.
Perhaps a search would find him in the 1911 census?

Extra, via Ancestry:
surname Ormerod, first names, number, battalion and regiment as you have them, also medal index card and medal roll..
Soldiers Died in the Great War shows birthplace as Shaw, Oldham and enlistment also Oldham.
Register of Soldiers' Effects names his father as John Thomas Ormerod who received the paltry amount of £2.11.8d, owing as war gratuity.

That would make an awful lot of sense Daggers, my searches had me believing he was nothing to do with Liverpool.
