John Stott - Grenadier Guards - Rgt No. 18272

Post by luxor »

John Stott
1882 Born Manchester about 1882
1901 (Census) with the Grenadier Guards (Served during the Boer War)
There is a note that he was formerly Regt No 8595 Grenadier Guards (Boer War Number?)
1904 Married Kathleen/Catherine Agnes McElroy
1911 (Census) The family was living in Sirdar Street, Liverpool at the census of 1911
1911 (Census) Occupation was 'Timekeeper(Safe Works)' - probably Milner's?
???? He enlisted again for WW1
1915 He was Killed In Action 15th/18th May
1919 His widow Kathleen was living at 32 Everton Terrace
1919 Kathleen re-married - Frederick Ernest Atkinson - and moved to Park Avenue, Fazakerley

There were a lot of John Stotts in the British Army during WW1. I finally isolated the right one from the Register Of Soldiers Effects that showed Kathleen as his wife. Then I found the Medal Card. There's no information about when he re-enlisted, where he was living at the time or if he was in any reserve before re-joining. Any information to fill in the gaps would be very welcome.

Obviously his Service Records aren't online and I've amended this post in view of Dagger's comment in the next post.

Just in case his Medal Card gives any clues to those who know better than I do

The Guards kept their own records, so his may still exist. You have to apply to the Grenadier headquarters in London, and probably pay a fee.

Thanks Mary and daggers; I'd assumed that because the records aren't online, that was the end of the story. Never assume...!

This page details how to request the records:

Even better; it also provides various documents including an on-line version of 'The Grenadier Guards in the Great War of 1914-1918' by Sir Frederick Ponsonby.

That's great information. A lot of military sources don't give addresses - I didn't have this one.
