Short term Enlistment Pre-W.W.1

Can anyone confirm the short term enlistment called 3 and 9's Pre. W.W.1 my Grandfather was in the S.L.I (Photo in the archives with the cap badge of the S.L.I and very faint Sergeant stripes (Taken off ) on a Utility uniform with wife and 2 Children which suggests a date of Pre.- W.W.1 or very early in the war Please

could the 3 and 9s be referring to money?

The Derby Scheme refers to 2s-9d signing payment,

I think 3 & 9 could be 3 years with the colours [i.e. full time soldiering] and 9 in the reserve, liable for recall. There ar experts about who could define this btter. There were different terms of engagement at various periods.

Thanks Daggers and Bertone Yes the 3 & 9's were brought in to boulster recruitment ( were 3 with the colours and 9 with the reserves an expert on the army confirmed that and gave me the relevant army orders the mystery is the utility uniform that came in at the start of the war and the Sergeant's stripes nobody in the family could confirm that Grandad was in the S.L.I and I can't find any confirmation on this (I live in hope of someone finding a clue ) thank you anyway
