Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
Nothing pops up on Anc for this man, its going to be difficult without any service records.
I'm not sure if getting in touch with the South Lancs museum would help, perhaps someone could advise on that.
Remind us, what marriage and any info on the marriage cert, 1897?
Edit, Found.

Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
Just so nobody is doing research I am already doing or should say threw the towel in on but now I'm picking it back up again, I keep going back to Woolton with this Isaac Banks name, off the top of my head Thomas Banks is with a Harrison family in the 1881 census in Woolton too.......this has always niggled away me.

Hi Barbara,
I'm going off memory and scribbled notes, it might be something and nothing, just coincidence?
The census you are referring to?
Thomas Harrison 55
Betsy Harrison 54
Robert Harrison 22
Thomas Banks 10 Grandson
Elizabeth Bellson 17
Arthur Lunt 19
RG11 P3721 F141 Page10
The names of interest are Thomas Banks & Arthur Lunt, also an address for Elizabeth Brown, 32 Moorgate St. I think her family home.
If memory serves, living at 35 Moorgate St was Robert James and wife Lucy, nee, Lunt.
Another possible connection, Isaac Banks, Watch Case Maker married Olivia James.
Sorry not many dates, will have to go through it all again.

Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
Yes that's the one Bertie and from memory there is an Isaac Banks also in the Widnes area, I've been thinking about this a lot, just because Thomas Henry Banks was born, married and died in Liverpool doesn't mean he lived there all his life. People moved around a lot in the 10 years between censuses and still do.
I bet nobody could match me up with censuses, I've a very common name and have moved a lot!!!

Re Olivia. There are many trees on Anc with her as the wife of Isaac Banks then a family built from there with children and so on.
On TH Banks' marriage certificate he says his father is a Carter. I can't marry that up with a Watch Case Maker surely you'd want that as your fathers occupation on an important day not a Carter though he's one himself.........

Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
I wouldn't rule someone out on that. I've got an ancestor with 13 kids. Lots of marriages; he's always a 'Labourer', apart from one. It's obviously an error - the name was originally 'Thomas' instead of 'George'. That's been changed, but they didn't fix the occupation. I'm convinced that some vicars or registrars liked to have the forms 'ready for signing' so they could get away quickly to see Man U play Liverpool on the box.... or whatever they did in those days! They didn't always get it right.BarbaraW wrote:On TH Banks' marriage certificate he says his father is a Carter. It's no different today. Vicars, taxi drivers, photographers, hotel managers; they all want a brisk adherence to the plan, and can become quite irritated if things get casual. It might be 'the most important day of her life' to the bride, but it's just another day's work to them. Maybe half a day, if they're trying to juggle two weddings back to back.

Good points Luxor, I will follow this up more closely though it all seemed a bit too pat to me when I last did some delving, now there is a whole lot more online I will give it another blast!!
I appreciate everybody's input on my brick walls.

Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
In 1881 young Thomas (no Henry) Banks and his brother George are living in Wilfer Street with their mother Alice. MaryA found a marriage for Isaac Banks and Sarah Alice Miller which is the only marriage to be found for Isaac in Liverpool I believe in the right time frame.
Over the past few days I have constructed a separate family tree of what I think (I could be wrong here) of Isaac Banks the one from Woolton/Ditton with a father John (gardener as on the above marriage certificate of 1874) John is an Ag Lab 1841, Farm Labourer 1851, Carter 1861 and Ag Lab again in 1871.
Alice says in 1881 her husband is at sea, there is an Isaac Banks on a ship called the Flavian.
There is a baptism at St Peter's for George Banks son of Isaac and Sarah Alice Banks born 1876 baptised 1877 which fits in nicely with the 1881 census info though I've not had much luck finding him after this nor his mother and I have seen so many Anc trees which are quite blatantly so wrong due to these shaky leaf hints not doubt, I got in a right muddle reading them all and trying to figure out where their errroneous information came from.
IF this is the right family I have numerous aunties, uncles and cousins but I'm still really not any nearer to establishing my Thomas Henry Banks as the census info as a family is so sparse. I am going to have to bite the bullet and go with the birth cert info given by another member (sorry I can't remember your name as I've spammed this site quite a bit
) and fingers crossed this isn't another tenner down the family tree drain.............

Only £9.25 ..... but if there is any way of putting a criteria to your request it might save the money if wrong.

Re: Orford Barracks, Warrington query 1891 census
I had some pennies set aside for buying certs, unfortunately The Genealogist has taken another 3 month Gold payment. I had checked on there over the past few days and saw I had no current card details (my card just changed in August) and thought I was "safe" but somehowMaryA wrote:Only £9.25 ..... but if there is any way of putting a criteria to your request it might save the money if wrong.
