Hi

I have been asked by a gentleman who came to visit the Liverpool help desk at the Central Library to help him locate any memorial that would have the soldier Corporal Charles Moorcroft Parry who was killed in action in 1917 listed on. He said the family resided at 33 Shanklin Street, Wavertree and the nearest church was St Mary's in Wavertree. He has everything on the soldier, but he would love to know if he is listed on any local memorial. I have checked the Town Hall database.

He is returning to the help desk next week.

You say he has "everything" on the soldier; what do you mean by that? he was serving with the 55th Division at the time of his death and is entitled to a War and Victory medal. This indicates he did not go overseas with his unit in 1915.

A search on the war Graves Photographic Project site produces an offer to provide a photo of C.M. Parry's CWGC headstone at VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, at modest cost.

Another search, on The National Inventory of War Memorials site produced several Parrys but not this one. This does not mean that his name does not appear, but it may not have been catalogued.

Cpl Parry served in 275th Brigade RFA*. This unit had various titles and sub-titles over the years, including "1st West Lancs". The successor unit resides at the Territorial barracks in Aigburth Road; I shall ask if anyone knows of a memorial with names, from the WW1 era.

He just gave me a piece of paper with the details on and said "I have everything else for him, I just want to find out if he is recorded on a memorial". I never had a chance to ask him what he had. Daggers I will pass on those details to him regarding the photograph of his grave. Thanks for putting me on to that site I will be able to get some articles for the soldiers from Whiston who I have been working on for 5 years. I have some pictures of graves which are not recorded on their data base do you think they will like copies to go in their database?

You are right - 287 was the number I knew them by in my TA days [long ago] and my fingers put what my brain did not intend! I shall edit the post to avoid confusion.

I have asked at the TA barracks in Aigburth Road, and at the church which now occupies the former 1st West Lancs Artillery HQ at Gainsborough Road, but neither has a memorial to Parry's former unit. [The church goes under the name of 'Frontline', which seems suitable, given the history of its building]

St Mary's original church was lost in the bombing of Nov 1940. In 1952 the congregation [or the CofE diocese] acquired the former Methodist chapel in Victoria Park, which became St Mary's. There is a website for the church:

If Cpl Parry's former school is known, and if it survives, that is another filed for research.

That figure [0] for the names on the St Mary's memorial is likely to be an error. Many memorials have been recorded for the Nat. Inventory, but few lists are accessible on their website. I shall try to have a look tomorrow.

I visited St Mary's this morning. There are indeed 30/40 names on a column in the churchyard, but I am sorry to say that Cpl Parry's name is not among them.

Well. I have more to update on this old post. A lady rang the Records Office last week looking for a Katie who was looking for a War Memorial with the name of Charles on. She left her contact Tel Number. The staff didn't know a Katie who helped on a Tuesday but they knew a Kathy. They gave me the details and I have just had a lovely conversation with Charles Moorcroft Parry's Relative. She is going to send me a copy of a letter her father wrote telling the family of Charles death also a small verse wrote by Charles himself before he was Killed. I have promised to see if I can put these two in contact.
