Back Again

Post by winstonevertongroovy »

Hi guys, well after a few years off here I'm finally back and hopefully this time I can make a real go of tracing my family history. I've found all the notes I made last time but will need to get my head around them as I've forgotten exactly how it all links together, (the joys of mental issues). So, where should I start?, do I subscribe to one of the online sites such as Ancestry uk or Find My Past and if so which is the best to go for?. I live in Devon now but was born in Liverpool where I stayed until I was 42, my dad and granddad where also born in Liverpool but I know my great granddad on my dads side was from Ireland and my great grandmother from Scotland and for now it's my dads side I want to trace. Do I start with getting birth certificates, looking at the censuses or what?, any advice on getting me up and running will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome back, Lee.

I prefer to subscribe to Ancestry and if needs be take out a months sub with FMP when the need arises.

You know there are knowledgeable and helpful members here, so fire off any questions and chew the fat on here before purchasing any certificates.

We will all try and point you in the correct direction.

Welcome back Lee. I agree with Bert that for Liverpool the better databases seem to be on Ancestry, however have you checked out your local library to see if they offer access to Ancestry/Findmypast as all libraries should offer at least the first for free, could save you a lump of money.

Thank you Mary and Bert much appreciated, not checked the library out yet but will get straight onto it, I'll also try the free trial Ancestry offers then take a subscription out, just don't want to spend money when I don't know how to use the sites properly so will get a bit of practice in 1st. I actually have more information than I thought I had and quite a bit of it came from members on here last time I was on.

Ah thanks for the link Bert I'd forgotten about all that, unfortunately the autism I have has me trying to do 56, (or is it 54?), things at once and I quite often go off on a tangent and totally forget what I was doing in the 1st place plus since I was last on here I've gone through 3 laptops, (a lot of my info was put on an external hard drive which I've only recently been able to access as it locked up on me as), and we've moved house 3 times as well!

Just moved your post over to a chattier place and you can post a new message on the Liverpool board when you have straightened your thoughts out and want help.

The 1939 Register might be a good starting point it's available on both Ancestry and Find My Past. You should be able to find some known ancestors on there with it being relatively recent. Older ancestors on the 1939 Register should appear on the 1911 census. Using the date of births on the 1939 Register you will have a good chance of identifying them on the 1911 census. Use the marriage indexes on Ancestry, Find My Past or Free BMD to look for possible marriages and maiden names of female ancestors. Lancs BMD is also useful as it often gives the church where a marriage took place. Identify possible births, marriages and deaths in the indexes whether you purchase certificates or not is up to you. In order for your tree to be correct you will need to buy at least some certificates to make sure you are following the right people going back. A lot of older marriages are now available online so always check thoroughly on Ancestry, Find My Past, Family Search etc before ordering. A lot of baptisms and burials are now online so they can provide similar information to births and deaths.

In your profile under the Preferences heading there is the option. I've checked it for you.
