A Local History timeline of Bootle in Liverpool.

Hi Guys

I have a keen interest in local history, and love to explore the timelines and events of the places locally to me, and where I work.

Bootle in Liverpool has a rich history going back from being first mentioned in The Domesday book, through World Wars to the present day.

I wrote the piece below which gives an outline and some images, to accompany.

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum. Bootle often gets described as "in Liverpool" it's more accurate to say in Merseyside or near Liverpool. Most migrants came to Liverpool and Bootle from within the British Isles (Britain and Ireland) with a smaller proportion from outside the UK. Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Manx migrants are usually highlighted for their Celtic otherness but often overlooked are the many English migrants who were also drawn to the area because of the success of the shipping industry. Looking at old census records you will notice that in the 19th century there were many more residents of Liverpool and Bootle that came from outside the area than there are now and tenants moved a lot more from property to property over time. There was a lot of people coming and going within the area and lots of people coming here and later sailing off to a new life overseas. The character of districts changed quickly over time with the wealthier residents moving on to better neighbourhoods and poorer residents from elsewhere replacing them. We've sort of come full circle in the 21st century with the popularity of apartments in city and town centres reversing this trend of outward movement.
