What's everyone's opinions on this site?
I'm already on Ancestry,
I've got a free account with myHeritage. It frustrating because it lets you have your tree and search and find matches quite a bit then asks for payment

Downsides seem: It is quite expensive, when searching records the ones they have aren't as good and I just don't like the interface.

But the pluses are that lots more people are connected and have their trees on there, (maybe that's just my family) the automatic discoveries are better than ancestry too,

Has anyone done the dna kit? I'm too scared to I think

I find that each of the subscription sites are worth using the free two week trial before jumping in and paying your money. It often depends on the county you are researching - ie Ancestry at present has the most data for Lancashire and Findmypast for Cheshire. I don't know what MyHeritage specialises in, but try out for whatever you are researching and see what works best for you. PS they are all expensive.

On the upside for MyHeritage, I have a tree on there because I uploaded my DNA to it, and I get matches and am also able to make contact with them, without a paid subscription. As I have other subscriptions I find that is enough for me.

As for DNA testing, there are a variety of tests on different sites, if you decide to go down that line you will find many matches, whichever site you use, many of which won't make any sense to you, be prepared for that as well as some good contacts. Whichever site you use, make sure it is one that allows you to download your raw data and that it is able, from that site, to be uploaded to other sites that have a large database of users to match to, such as the free site Gedmatch.com

I have found that the majority of my DNA and tree matches have already shared their data to other sites, I don't need a paid subs to MyHeritage - only my personal opinion, if I didn't have a subs I might think otherwise.

Hi, Luke and hope you are enjoying the info from this site. I have had an ancestry DNA test just before Christmas and it did confirm cousins I had met through other sites. I also met a couple of others who have been pleased to make contact. They do give a lot of contacts, some don't seem to want to make contact, which I don't understand. Hasn't helped me with any brick walls yet though.
Have you tried " Lost Cousins" It is not the same type of site, but it can put you in touch with Lost Cousins. https://www.lostcousins.com You can pay a small fee , but you can also just be a free member. Give it a go.
Regards Lynne

I personally dont really like My Heritage. I found that every time I used the site subscription free, 2 minutes later I would get a call from them asking me do I want to take out a subscription. After many times of saying that I already subscribed to Ancestry and FMP, I did not want another pay site.

I have uploaded my DNA from Ancestry ages ago, but to be honest, have found the matches very disappointing and nothing to get me interested. Every time I do go to check something, it tells me I have to subscribe to see things, so very frustrating. Syill not paying for another subscription though :)

Yeah I agree...its frustrating I.can see some family members I actually speak to who are on the site..wish they'd chosen one of the other ones!
yeh Don't want to be getting called!

Thanks for that site Lynne.
I.Don't think there's any cousins I couldn't find from
A phonecall, but there is a couple of closed lines of my family tree It would be nice if I could find out. Would be nice if someone got me a dna kit as a gift, I don't think I'd get my self one..yet. I got the ancestry one for my mother in law and she loved it. It revealed some close and distant matches. Her cousin got in touch who she hadn't seen since childhood :) and they've agreed to meet up. Nice result :)
