Thanks Mary. Interesting reading I've read similar accounts. The Irish narrative of the 1798 Rebellion is that it was a just cause for democracy and equality supported by both Catholics and Protestants but the many atrocities carried out by the rebels such as at the barn at Scullabogue reveal its sinister sectarian, genocidal side. The rage of the rebels in Wexford was stoked by the activities of anti-Catholic mobs and repressive military prior to full blown hostilities. This was a revolutionary era when many people in Britain and Ireland hoped for reform in society. The American and French revolutionary movements had caused people to question whether we had the right system of government and individual rights.
