Hi Ann,

I kept postponing installing Windows 10 but it only allowed me to delay two days at a time, then suddenly the process began by itself and I was dreading the outcome.

But all went well, and although I use Family Historian nothing seemed different and all my data was there.

In fact I hardly notice any difference except that the "Shut down" button is accessed from the bottom left rather than the top right as is the search. I tried it on a Windows 7 laptop first and it does seem like it has tidied and speeded that up a little.

A transfer of all your programme with data should go smoothly.

Hi
Mary asked me to reply as I'm a FTM user but I haven't upgraded my laptop to windows 10 as yet! So am afraid I can't answer :? although I have done a google search - "family tree maker 2014 to windows 10" that a lot of people have been having problems opening FTM after installation. Might be as well to have a google yourself and read some of the forums, some were before windows 10 was launched but one was last week and she couldn't open her FTM.
It looks as though for some people all has been needed is to update their version of FTM 14 found this to manually update
Website: http://help.ancestry.com/app/answers/de ... dates#res3

Manual Installation - Windows Vista, 7, 8, & 10

If you do not receive an update notification and you are not running version number 22.0.0.404 or 22.0.0.1404, you will need to install the latest update.

Confirm what version of Family Tree Maker you are running by clicking on Help and then selecting About Family Tree Maker. A window will come up that lists which version of Family Tree Maker you are currently running.
If your installed version of Family Tree Maker 2014 is not version 22.0.0.404 (32 bit) or 22.0.0.1404 (64 bit) you can down load the latest patch here:
32-bit patch here, (.zip ) or (.exe)
64-bit patch here, (.zip) or (.exe)
Close Family Tree Maker.
Unzip the file, if needed.
Run the .exe file.

If you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 you may need to open the file as an administrator. To do so, right-click the .exe file in the downloads folder. A drop-down menu will be displayed. Select Run as Administrator.

Note: When installing the executable patch, you may be asked to locate the file to patch. You can select either the Family Tree Maker shortcut located on the desktop or the ftm.exe file which should be located in the C:\Program Files\Family Tree Maker 2014 folder.

Verify Family Tree Maker is up-to-date

Open Family Tree Maker 2014. DO NOT open any trees yet.
Click the Help menu item at the top of the program.
Click About Family Tree Maker from the drop down menu.
On the Product Information tab there is a version number. If the update was successful the version number will be 22.0.0.404 for the 32-bit and 22.0.0.1404 for the 64-bit.
If no notification is displayed and your product version is not 22.0.0.404 or 22.0.0.1404 then please do a manual install as described above.

Hope this helps! It shouldn't do anything with the data you have in the program it just looks as though the program won't open.
Kathryn

Presumably if you keep whatever you are transferring from - either old computer, flash drive or external hard drive - as a backup, then you can't lose anything.

Yes, if you do as Mary says and have your tree data backed up on something else your data will never disappear! It sounds as though people's problems have only been with getting the program to open on Windows 10 your data isn't effected by this other than not being able to get the program open to view it!
Would be good to know how yours works out when you do install for future reference.
