Hello All
I hope I've come to the right site Can anyone tell me the name of the pub that stood at 16 Tithebarn St. It seems there were a murder done nearby in 1874 by a gang called "The Cornermen" I believe a relative of mine ran this pub. I am thinking it were called the "The Rising Sun". Not sure about the timeline. Any help much appreciated.

Hopefully one the crew has access to the Licencing records and can tell you when the Halls moved to The Rising Sun.

What was the relative's name? The Rising Sun appears to be still there but now called Shenanigans, across the road from Cheapside on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Smithfield Street. If you look on Google Maps there's an image of the sun between the windows of the first floor. "The Tithebarn Street Outrage" took place outside a pub on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Lower Milk Street. There was a pub on each corner there was a pub at 91 and 93. Both these pubs and Lower Milk Street itself have gone.

Thank you for quick replies. The rel. name is Wainwright, John I think. I'm sure its no. 16. Some times its hard to remember what are facts whats hearsay, and getting dates right. But its definitely Wainwright.

The 1870 directory has a J Wainwright, Publican, 381 Scotland Rd, checked again, 1881, 16 Tithebarn St doesn't appear to be a pub.

From 1871 Census... RG10 Piece: 3771 Folio: 80 Page: 4
Note by enumerator:
"Tithebarn Street: Nos 12, 14, 16, 18. The two former are offices and the others are lockup shops, Stationers & ???shop".

I went to Liverpool myself to-day (giants and ships) I called into a pub which seemed to be numbered 18-16 Tithebarn St., with some waste land next door. The pub was called The Railway, a few yards down from a pub called The Lion. Across the road, facing the Railway pub was the old Exchange station, if I remember correctly was a very popular railway station comes the 12th July.
Now bringing to-gether all the information that you have provided, Its obvious I will have to again look at my notes..... I will of course keep you posted.

Thank you.I can't argue with that Could I please ask you for the name of the pub at 381 Scotland Rd? Would it be by St. Anthony Church?

It was the Saddle Inn. Looks like it would have been the other side of the road from St Anthony's
