At various times in my life, I heard a Family member referred to as 'Liverpool Irish'.
Does this describe some-one born in Ireland & living in Liverpool or is there some other origin for it?
While we're here, would a lass who married in Australia in 1856 & claiming Cork 1839 as her birth place, have resided in Liverpool for a time before leaving for Australia.? Hoping to find long sought G.G'Mother.

Re: 'Liverpool Irish'
It would be my understanding that in addition to an Irish born, it could well include the immediate family who may have been born in Liverpool, reason for thinking this is because the original parents would probably have talked fondly about the "old country" and the children also looking on this as home. I know my grandmother thought this way, although she was born in Liverpool but the family did return to Ireland for a number of years when they were children and then came back again.
Couldn't say 100% that a girl coming over from Ireland would have stayed a while in Liverpool, but there is certainly a likelihood that either she came across with her family while still a child, or later even as a teenager/early 20's. In either case the intended final destination may have been Liverpool and either the plan didn't work out, or perhaps they came thinking to save a little money to pay for the ticket onwards.
If their plan was to emigrate, then they could, I believe, have boarded the ship in either Ireland or Liverpool.

Re: 'Liverpool Irish'
English, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Manx were considered to be race groups in the old days. US immigration records show that the Irish were recorded as being from the Irish race. My Great Grandfather's sister went to the USA in 1913 and her details show that she was British, born in Liverpool but her race was Irish. Different groups maintained a separateness in Liverpool which created a hybrid identity ie the Liverpool Irish being Catholics lived in close knit communities, the Liverpool Welsh were different because of their language and chapels.

Re: 'Liverpool Irish'
Thank you Mary A & Blue70,
My Gt.G'Mother was 17 when she married my Gt.G'father having come to Australia 'alone' in 1855.
My query re living in Liverpool was because I did find someone of same name in Liverpool 1851. hoped family had all left Ireland together. Perhaps she had met my g.G'Father before he left Liverpool. he arrived Austraian Colonies 1849/50 according to hospital records.
His Father John Mitchell b.1788 according to 1841 census.
G.G'ma's family- Murphy of Cork. Wouldn't you know it?
Can't just find that census now that I need it.
