Hi, now that the new central library has reopened, i am looking for recommendations for a reliable researcher to look for a death notice for me, or the coroners inquest. Thankyou

Yes, i have tried find my past, just say's no results found. At the time of death the home address was Livingstone Road, Rock Ferry.

Livingstone Rd, Rock Ferry was Birkenhead, Cheshire, the Liverpool Echo may have recorded the accident but the most likely newspaper to have done so would have been the Birkenhead News. Any inquest I would think, would also have been held at Birkenhead. Wirral Archives and Birkenhead Central Library hold records, have you had any contact with any of these and have you received any results. I can make some enquiries for you if the Library or Archives on your behalf haven't already done so.

Yes i'm afraid it's still Mary Jane Marsh . I had a break from it as i was going around in circle's and driving myself mad. The inquest story was in the Birkenhead News 26th July 1913, page 3. The Wirral Archives Officer sent me the report and could find no obituary or death notice. She also checked Wallasey and Eastham Cemeteries. She has allready checked Flaybrick and Town Lane Cemeteries but no entries for Mary there either. A lady on here found that St Elphin's was listed as her burial place but i have had no luck there either, so thought it was time to get in some help as i maybe missing something.

Unfortunately a lot of the graveyards in built-up areas have fallen victim to vandalism and so they have been grassed over and landscaped.

I would have thought that, given that she lived in Rock Ferry, she'd have been buried at Flaybrick which is the nearest cemetery. The fact that she isn't, and that there was a news article about her death in the News but no death notice makes me think she had been taken back to her home town to be buried. Maybe her father bought a family plot? - something they seemed to do at that time. Certainly my great-grandfather did - he, his daughter and grandsons are all buried together (but again, that grave has been landscaped over some time ago). Something maybe to think about.

It appears the Archives officer has covered all that's available, I know they are very thorough and I doubt I could find anything different. I've looked for death notices/ obituaries from that period of time and they are amazingly scarce in comparison with today, perhaps affordability played a part.
I think it less likely notification of her death or funeral arrangement would be published in Birkenhead if she had no family here and the funeral was taking place elsewhere.

Any idea why she was in Rock Ferry at the time?

Thankyou Fledge, definatly worth looking into. The problem is that i cant find the exact date of birth for Mary, only the year as there are too many match's and her father is John Jackson which is such a common name and i cant find her mother. In the census it says that Mary was born in Warrington so i have been looking there aswell with no luck. I love family history research but after 2 years of looking for her i think this is beyond my capabilities. Im in Manchester in a few weeks so am hoping to get a couple of hrs in Liverpool and would love to have found her grave by then so i can visit as i don't get to Liverpool very often. I hate to give in but a researcher would be worth the money .

You could order the Film from a Church of the Latter Day Saints family history Centre there is one in Chorley to obtain a copy of that burial entry that was found by Jan44.

Also a obituary may have been published in a Warrington Newspaper. It seems strange that Cheshire Records have not got the Registers. The Church say they are at Cheshire but according to the NRA they do have items for St. Elphin but no Parish Registers are listed. Very Strange.

However, if you are in Manchester at the moment why not take a trip to Warrington? The library there holds the parish registers and local newspapers on microfilm. Here is a link to a guide to their holdings,

It says that they have the burial registers up to 1968 so why are they informing Marshy77 that they can't help her with the burial entry.

I have previously been in contact with recordoffice@cheshiresharedservices.gov.uk for the burial of Mary, for which they have told me they have no record of her. Even though it state's they hold the burial's for St Elphin's from 1591-1968. This is why i am close to tearing my hair out.

I think, as Tex says, I'd be making my way to Warrington library if you have time.

Have you tried searching for John Jackson? I don't know why she isn't being shown in burial records - if Familysearch have a transcription, it's come from somewhere. When I was searching for a grave (for a long time), I tried a number of churches, and when I finally found it, there were three other people I'd been trying to locate at rest in the same grave. My gut feeling, I don't know why, is that your great-grandma has been returned home to be buried with family. Could be entirely wrong, but...

Entries in the familysearch site have proved problematic before, I know Hilary got in touch with them because one of her entries didn't show which church the event took place at.

If I were you I would email them with the details, including and especially the references as the parish should be listed on their microfilm but they just haven't included it in their transcriptions.

My recollect ions of this quest is that Cheshire RO checked Monumental inscriptions. You need to look at the burial register which is different. The MIs are only of gravestones and as many people did not have a gravestone these are not a complete indication of actual burials.


If Warrington library have St Elphin on film you need to go and check them for the date given on Family search and a year either side. If she is not there after a personal search you need to check the burials of every Warrington church and also the local municipal cemetery as well.

Whilst at the library also check the local newspaper to see if that is any help.

My problem with Family search was that the film my grandmother's baptism was on contained 9 different churches so I have not yet found which it was just narrowed it down to 4,
