I am indignant for a poor child

Post by MaryA »

Revisiting some of my tree I find I have been a bit remiss in missing out updating some far flung branches in the 1911 census. A brother to my grandfather's first wife Rose Baile, Thomas Baile had lost his wife in the last quarter of 1899, probably in childbirth as their daughter Olive was born in the same quarter.

Expecting to find young Olive with either father or one of the other family members, I searched for Thomas in 1911 and found him with a new wife and two children but no Olive. A search of the deaths also didn't reveal her. So doing another search of the 1911 census I have discovered an Olive Bailey - slightly different spelling, but could that be a mistake due to the pronunciation of the surname? born Bootle, of the right age. I also cannot find a birth entry of the right date for an Olive Bailey so do believe I have found the right one.

She is living in 30 Church Road, Wavertree, Schedule completed by R Shanks. The kind of building is a Home for Girls with a Sick Ward containing one person. However, the Schedule on the next page has the address amended from 30 to 32 Church Road, Mrs Shanks as Superintendant for the "Scholfield Home" Church of England Home for Waifs and Strays!!!!

I am indignant on the child's behalf - I wonder if the new stepmother didn't want the baby from a previous marriage.

An investigation to be put on the list for the Record Office when they open up again, to see if they hold any admittance registers.

Poor little thing. I'm indignant for her, too. What happened to her, do you know?

This seemed to happen a number of times in my family, the father started a new family and effectively washed his hands of his other children. :(

Poor kid...
I have a pair of uncaring parents in my lot. Husband was a brother to my paternal g.mother. He and his wife had 5 children. 2 died within a year, one literally disappeared, and the youngest two [boys aged 4 and 8] were found 'abandoned' in Mill Lane in 1898 and were taken into Brownlow Hill, then transferred to Kirkdale Schools. The oldest boy died there in 1903. The younger lad survived via Olive Mount, married and died in the late 1960s. The parents vanished between 1898 and April 1901.

Sadly I don't, as it was very much a sideline I hadn't really be very interested, but haven't come across a death or marriage as yet, I may take a look at the Home Childrens lists, it looks like there might have been a good chance of her being shipped off abroad.

It might be worth getting a copy of the will to see who she left her money too!

Probate was nearly 9 years after her death, I wonder why it took so long?

Administration not a Will unfortunately, the money went to her husband Thomas, that information is given in the Probate record.
BAILE Eleanor Olive Ayton of Grey Street, Bootle, Lancashire (wife of Thomas Baile) died 29 October, 1899 Administration Liverpool 22 September to the said Thomas Baile butcher. Effects £292 18s 10d.

I've asked the question about why matters take so long before, as I have another Administration that also took that long, but this time when the husband died, neither I have been unable to discover why that one took so long. It seems strange that debts can take so long to be settled before the payout can be made.

Couldn't find any entries of the child travelling overseas, a possible later entry in a medical journal for Wales, her name becoming Llewellyn Jones, but can't find a marriage for a Baile to a Jones.

Newspapers perhaps to be investigated for the parents.

The administration would say when he applied for power to adminster the estate. If he applied late there may be a reason given. Was there anything mysterious about her death? Maybe she had inherited money!

According to the National Archives money calculator £292 in 1905 is worth getting on for £17,000 in 2005 so she was quite well off!

Well, that's something, I suppose. Strange how we - well, I, certainly - get drawn into the fates of these abandoned children. :|

Thanks Katie, will do.

Yes Fledge, me too, I hope Katie finds something in the Will that mentions her, hate thinking that she is a "Waif and Stray" when she had a well off mother.

And a well off Grandfather also, Brayshaw Thomas Hill who left a few bob, wondering if something came to light regarding Eleanor's Will when he died in 1907, his Probate was 1908,
The home only took girls between 3 and 16, http://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/homes/WAVER01.html

Wondering where Olive was up to 3years old?

Found her.

If it's an administration it will not mention anyone by name. The deceased has died intestate and not made a will so their wishes are not known. It will be an application to administer the estate of the deceased and they are often a printed form with the relevant parts filled in. The applicant is usually the next of kin or as it says on a form I have one of the persons entitled to share in the estate.

Hi Mary, I knew Church Rd very well, especially the Coffee House pub!! and no I never had a coffee..... :D
Number 30 was the School for the Blind, I used to see the children often taking a walk, tied to each other.

Interesting, I may have to research this family and add them into my tree.

Found her.
This was the start of my interest, the lodger William R Lunt was my grandfather and he married Rose Ann, the eldest daughter at home.
Wendyem wrote:I wonder if she was later adopted by a Jones Family?
If you were referring to the medical directories, there is definitely an Olive Baile listed who later is listed as being married, Mrs Llewellyn Jones, maiden name Baile.

There is another Olive Baile born Fulham, but the dates won't work for it to be her.

Small world still, the cottages beside the Coffee House, still there, were Lunts Cottages, I believe owned by my ancestor.

Hi again Mary, in Anx 1911 it doesn't list the final column where disabilities are listed, sadly.
1911 Kellys has Mrs Emmeline R Shanks as the boss cocky for the Scholfield Home and also School for the Blind same address.
Rose Shanks is a widow born in India in 1911 Anx, I believe she could be Emmeline R Shanks in 1901 32 wid born India governess out of employment staying in North Hackney London.

The Waifs and Strays society is now the Children's Society. They may have records. I've checked elsewhere and Olive wasn't blind.
