Does anyone know what's happening with Liverpool libraries' 19th Century newspapers? It's disappeared from the list:-

I had heard that it wasn't working. I'll ask the staff, but it maybe because they are now on Find My Past and they have a subscription for that?

I've known it to disappear and then return a few days later so hopefully it's a temporary thing. It's really useful having online access to the Liverpool Mercury for coroners' inquests it'll be a pain having to wait for a trip to the library if it's been taken off permanently.

Yes, I know I was up till 3 one morning looking at reports for Whiston, for Local History Purposes. I'll find out tomorrow. In fact I'll jot a email of toe the Boss now.

I often see past 3am for family history purposes it's very addictive LOL.

I received a reply from David Stoker.

Hi Kathy

The British Library has withdrawn access for public libraries to the digitised and indexed 19th century British newspapers database which included the “Liverpool Mercury”.

This is because they are now working with a private sector partner, Bright Solid, which is responsible for “Find my Past”. The good news is that they will expand the coverage to comprise more newspapers and a wider date range, which I understand will include some of the “Liverpool Echo” as well as the Mercury. We have been trying to get our subscription activated but the company has not done this for us yet so we will keep chasing it.

The revised access will be possible in all of our libraries as before when set up, but the BL/Bright Solid arrangement will no longer allow access for library users from home. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about that.

I'm living in Hampshire and have just looked at my library online and found I can still see the 19th Century Newspapers Access.
Not sure whether they are planning taking the facility away, but if anyone needs a look, let me know. Not sure whether that's breaking any rules or not, please advise me if it is.

That's a great shame to lose the access from our Liverpool library, but do you have membership to a Lancashire library as you can get access through that.

and then check out the link for the Online Reference Library to see what is available to you with your membership.

The Lancs link to 19th century newspapers and Times online was ok for me an hour or two ago.

I think it is the Liverpool link, using the Lancashire Library facility will hopefully resolve the matter.
