Would you allow your family tree to be sold? Let's suppose you uploaded your family tree to one of the many websites that offers online trees. How would you feel if that website then sold your tree to another website?
Did you realise that when you create an Ancestry family tree, even if it's a private tree, you "grant Ancestry a non-exclusive, transferable, sublicenseable, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, publish, distribute, provide access to and otherwise use such material, including, hosting and access on co-branded services of that material, and to use the data contained in that material as search results and to integrate that data into the Service as Ancestry deems appropriate"?
Yet another reason why my hard-earned tree is not on Ancestry or any other subscription site!

Absolutely! This is why we hear so many complaints from those who use it yet have never properly read the T & C's, that their tree has been "stolen", however that paragraph seems to take it even further as it also applies to private trees as well as public ones.
I would suspect that GR has similar conditions.

I received an email this morning from Family History Bulletin offering over 400 million family trees to access in a 3 day free trial. Familylink is a My Heritage Company.
Too complicated for me to track down who is at the bottom of it all.

I have been pursuing my heritage interest for over 15 years. I just made a rough count of the collection of BMD certs I have purchased in that time in order to prove a connection, take the next step etc. I have over 75! That's a fair old expenditure that the likes of Ancestry would like for nothing.

I have one tree on Ancestry hoping for contacts from distant family members. There's probably more chance of people seeing your stuff on Ancestry than elsewhere. I don't upload any images etc to Ancestry. I have two websites that mainly have census records. I always keep stuff back so if anyone copies it they don't have the full picture.
I don't put my trees on any site. Every now and again I have a look to see if anyone else is researching my families and I might make contact if I feel like it.
I wouldn't not subscribe to sites such as Ancestry I just don't put my tree on it.
I wouldn't want people to worry about putting information out there. The advantages are you have more of a chance of contacting people who might be able to help you fill in some gaps in your family history. It's also a good thing for people to share histories about ordinary people who don't appear in the history books.
