I know this has been a topic which is now locked.
Just want to say I wasn't impressed with fmp records.
Found my grandee bn Walton should be Dalton. It doesn't give any more info, not the year of sailing, etc before you click on to find more which costs 20 credits.
Some just had the initial G.
I have found him going ashore in Ellis Island and also through some in Anx.
If I pay 20 credits, will I find the same info?

FMP does give you some idea of what the records are and what you may find on them. On the right hand side of the page it says Merchant Navy seamen FAQ and have a read.
I was delighted to find my great uncle there complete with a photo. It printed out find at home and even better when I did it on the local library's new printer. I've also found other relatives there some of whom I wasn't aware went to sea.
I have a subscription to FMP for some years. It is very different from Ancestry but I find it very useful to me they compliment one another.
Transcription are variable wherever you look. The worst I've ecver seen was that Ancestry has transcribed Ainsdale as Dinsdale throughtout the whole 1891 census!!
I've just found another relative, I think I may have found how he got to the USA!
Just another thought they do do free trials!
