Fascinating snippet of news from 1880!

While searching the Non-Conformist and Roman Catholic Burials in Cheshire [17th century to 1910] I came across an insightful note on a particular Burial Entry by the rector.
Under the entry for a Michael Mulraney of Northwich, buried on the 24th of September 1880 is this, in the Rector's own hand:

N.B. This was the first funeral under the Burials Bill Amendment Act of 1880 in virtue of which I was the first Priest who ever read the funeral service in the protestant church at Leftwich. The Catholics were exceedingly glad, and there was a fair gathering both of Catholics and Protestants. Everything passed off very quietly. Johannes Barry, Rector.

Makes one think of some of the problems there were back then.
