The 6th of December is St Nicholas’ Day, a day of special significance to Liverpool because the old way of judging a Scouser was to say ‘a person born within the sound of St Nicholas’ bells’. A person born within the sound of St Nicholas’ bells would be called a Dickie Sam in the 18th century, rather like Cockneys are those born within the sound of Bow bells. That lasted until sometime in the 19th century.
