Passport Applicatin records
I think this question has been asked before but I can't remember the answer. Is there any way to trace a passport application from the 1920's or 30's from England to Australia? I'm still trying to find concrete evidence of the missing Daly family who I have been told went to Oz around about that time.
Thanks in advance

Re: Passport Applicatin records
Have checked a couple of the main subscription sites, one seems to cover other places, the other has applications between 1851 and 1903.
You might find some useful information http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... ssport.htm seems you might be able to browse the registers of British passport applications in FO 610 at Kew, which are arranged by date and by passport number.

Re: Passport Applicatin records
If they went to OZ they should be listed in the Outgoing Passenger Lists. They are fairly complete I believe. Post the name/ages/last known address and I'll have a browse. There's only about 65 passengers named Daly travelling to Australia between 1920 and 1935. Some have forenames, some only initials. But if a family travelled on the same manifest they will be indexed together.Barbara B wrote:I think this question has been asked before but I can't remember the answer. Re: Passport Applicatin records
Thank you DS for the offer. Here goes:
Paul J Daly born 1886
Christina Daly born 1886
Margaret Daly born 1909
Mary Daly born 1910
Paul J Daly born 1914
Christina born 1912
Last address in England - 1n 1911 34, Wolfe street
If it's any help Christina's sister travelled out to Australia twice and I've been led to believe she went with them at one point. She travelled on the Otranto in 1926 and the Balranald in 1933.

Re: Passport Applicatin records
Sorry Barbara,
Searched from 1914 to 1940, for Paul, P, Christina, C, Daly/Daley with open ages, together/separate, with and without company [children] and didn't get a hit for Australia. Indeed, not for any destination so far but still looking.
What was Christina's sister's name when she travelled in 1926 and 1933?

We may be in luck...
This for the Otranto leaving London:
Name: Mrs M TESTER
Date of departure: 18 September 1926
Port of departure: London
Passenger destination: Sydney, Australia
Date of Birth: 1890 (calculated from age)
Age: 36
Occupation: Home Duties
Last UK address: 153 Mill Street, Liverpool.
Passenger recorded on: Page 23 of manifest.
The following are possible travelling companions:
Miss M DALY - Page 24 of manifest - Address: 1 Torbock Street, Everton - Destination Sydney- Age 17 - Tailoress.
Miss M F DALY - Page 24 of manifest - Address as above - Destination Sydney - age 16 - Domestic.
I couldn't find any Dalys with Margaret in 1933 on the Balranald. Is it possible the parents Paul and Christina didn't go down-under? And other children may have gone separately?
Could this be relevant?
Death: DALY, Christina
Registration district: Liverpool
Year /qtr of registration: 1929 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 42
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 78.
There's only one CD in Liverpool of abt the right age in 19**shhh.

Re: Passport Applicatin records
Wow DS I think you might have cracked it! It's too much of a coincidence. Maybe the rest of the family meant to go but Christina's death changed their plans.
Any idea how I can trace the two girls once they got to OZ?
Thank you very much, that's another little crack in the wall.

I think our friends down-under are best placed for finding the girls arrival. It is likely they stayed with Margaret Ellen for a while, before moving on. Probably a new post asking for the specific trace help with 'Australia' in the subject line?Barbara B wrote:Wow DS I think you might have cracked it! It's too much of a coincidence. A very good question, DS and one which I've been trying to answer for long time. This is the first concrete bit of info so I'm about to post for a bit of Aussie help. Fingers crossed!

Re: Passport Applicatin records
With a luck and perseverance, and there's lots of both down there, you should get the forenames of the two girls from their arrival in Sydney to confirm they are Margaret and Mary. You might also look for a Liverpool directory to see who was living at 1 Torbock Street, Everton, the girls' last UK address, in September 1926.Barbara B wrote:A very good question, DS and one which I've been trying to answer for long time. Re: Passport Applicatin records
Hi D.S
In a certain census where Margeret Ellen would be 31, Ancestry states errors...
Have a look please, it's Woolwich. I'm wondering if they are all Army wives lumped together.
Very odd.
She married George Tester in 1906.

You are right. The listing is for Woolwich Barracks and Cambridge Cottages, where the wives are, are the married quarters. The enlisted men come first, followed by wives and families.
Incidentally Margaret is shown as Tister, with a definite dot over the i, so can't make a correction.

Re: Passport Applicatin records
DS and Tina, you are right, George was in the army until about 1916 when he was discharged as 'unfit for service'. I know he died quite young but haven't been able to find the exact date. I do know he was buried in Croydon because when Margaret Ellen (known in the family as aunty Tess) died her two great nephews went with her body to Croydon as she had stated she wanted to be buried with George. She never re-married and had no children. I remember aunty Tess - a formidable lady. She left Liverpool to live in Tarleton during the war and never went back. I remember my Gran, her niece getting the bus from Anfield to Tarleton and stopping off to see us when we lived in Ormskirk. What a route march!

Re: George Tester
Hi Barbara,
These are the only deaths for George from 1916 to 1940, when I assume Margaret was a widow by then.
TESTER, George - Surrey, Croydon - 1921
TESTER, George W - London, Greenwich - 1928
TESTER, George - Hertfordshire, Hitchin - 1933
TESTER, George - Durham, Sunderland - 1936
Given that you already have a link to his being buried in Croydon I'd say this is #1...
TESTER, George
Registration district: Croydon, Surrey
Year/qtr of registration: 1921 / Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 46
Volume no: 2A; Page no: 306.
I am wondering if his war experiences contributed to his death?

Re: Passport Applicatin records
You're probably right, DS although there is nothing specific on his war record.
Margaret Ellen was a devout Catholic and George converted - family lore has it he died at the altar rails! Obviously winging straight to heaven.
By the way, one of the witnesses at their wedding was ....Christina Daly, née Cummings.

Marriage: Paul J Daly married Daisy M Preston
Registration district: West Derby.
Year/qtr of registration: 1934 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 713
Didn't find any children to this marriage yet.
Death: DALY, Paul Joseph
Registration district: Liverpool.
Year/month of registration: 1984 / November
Date of Birth: 4 March 1914
Volume no: 36; Page no: 385; Reg no: 1184.
Given that his birth was registered in the June qtr of 1914, this looks good.
There is another marriage, but it's 'over the water', and quite late and there are a number of Daly/Livesey births. I don't think this is your man.
Paul J Daly married Edna Livesey
Registration district: Wallasey, Cheshire
Year/qtr of registration: 1956 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 10A; Page no: 1527.
Still looking for Christina the daughter bn 1912.

Hi All
Off topic
Tracking Mary Frances for your other post, I found another one born 1902, her father Paul Joseph 56.
He and his wife Jane had 15 children, 6 living and 9 died. How awful!
Cannot imagine coping with this.
btw sent an error for Oswald's middle name to Furniss.
