Botanic Park

When I was a child I lived in Botanic Road.The park couldn't have been any closer,and my mother often took us there on sunny afternoons.I distinctly remember the ornamental lake which was to the right hand side if you entered from the Wavertree Road set of gates,near to the railway railings.I was told a few years ago that there was a shooting,possibly in town,and the police believed that the gun was thrown into the lake.It was drained,I don't know if the gun was found but I know that the lake was never refilled.Has anyone else heard this story?

I,too, grew up on Botanic Road at the Wavertree Road end. With my cousins who also lived at Nana's, we played around the "pond" and paddled in it. The aim was to get to the island but I was a bit small. There was a parrot who sat on the roof of the parlour bay window and he used to call out. We thought it was nana and would come running home. My mum used to hop the railing and walk across to work at Littlewoods Pools. Did you ever climb the railway walls and jump over to the roof of the "air raid shelter"?
Yes, I, too, heard the lake was drained for the gun. I think they drained it a couple of times to clean out the rubbish. I looked on GoogleMaps and couldn't see it these days. Botanic Road doesn't look that different.

I only passed the park on the way to the shops. I lived near the "Mystery".
