James Ruddy 1897 - 1923

Hi Folks
I have come across a puzzle with a great uncle and wonder if you can offer any advice.

James Ruddy born 1897 Bootle (I have his birth certificate) and after a 5 year search have found his death - thanks to Anc*

James was a seaman and I have just found a City Coroners report issued by Sydney Hospital in Australia 19 June 1923 which reads
"Injuries accidentally received through colliding with a human body while diving into the water at (?---------?) Baths". :shock:
Sorry cannot read the name of the baths. I have found his death registration and hope to send for the certificate in the next few weeks.

Can anyone advise me if an obituary would have been in the newspapers as I would be interested to know what happened to the "human body"?

I suppose it would depend on whether he still had family in Liverpool - if it's a Liverpool newspaper that you were wondering about.

Might it be more likely that there would be a notice about the accident in an Australian newspaper?

Yes He was born in Bootle to Mary Ann and James Ruddy.
I will try to upload the image
And finally Erica I will look at the Trove site tomorrow.

Yappie, I forgot to tell you how to upload an image with Photobucket...

You can't upload a photograph directly to this forum so if you want to show a picture this is one of the easiest ways to do it.

1) Make sure the image scan is the best quality image you can manage and is a reasonable size. If the image is of a complete page and your 'query' is about only part of it, if you can you should crop the image to remove the 'unnecessary bits'. If you don't have an image cropping utility you can use the one on the Photobucket site.

2) Join http://photobucket.com/ for free. This is an image hosting website.

3) Upload your picture to the above site and then, if necessary, use the crop/clip facility on the site to reduce the image to include only the relevant part. Then left click on the IMG Code under the picture you want to appear on the forum. A yellow box flashes up, with Copied written in it.

4) Now go to the 'Post a reply' box on the forum topic where you want show your photo. Write your message and to insert the picture right click the mouse and select Paste. This will paste the code that you copied from Photobucket into your message.

5) Press 'Preview' to see your image before you submit your message.

Great find Erika!
James was buried on 8th Jan 1923 at Rookwood Catholic Section.
Sorry I don't live closer otherwise I'd do a look up.

For all - Erica found the newspaper article for James as follows:

"05/01/1923 At 9 o'clock last evening James Ruddy 25 years of age fireman on the ss PIAKO was diving in the Pyrmont Baths when he struck a mate in the water. He was taken by the Civil Ambulance to Sydney Hospital where he was admitted suffering from a fractured spine. His condition is serious."

Sadly James died the next day.

Your offer of help is very much appreciated Tina. I have a contact for Rookwood Cemetary - who advertised in the Liverpool Journal and I may try him again. He is a volunteer at Rookwood who are cateloging all the old graves. He actually found my grandfather's grave and sent me photographs which were very gratefully received.

MaryA - a result indeed considering the story which came down the family was that James and his brother died in WW1 in france. It wasn't until FMP added the Merchant Seamans records that I found him. I now have his CR10 with a photograph which was an added bonus plus it gave his date of death.

I have tried to enhance a section of the coroners report but it looks like the original was a double A3 size book reduced to A4 and trying to enlarge only blurs the image even more. If there is anyone who can do better I am quite happy to email a copy to them.

Again your help is very much appreciated.

I emailed Rookwood Cemetary Australia to see if they could give me James' grave number and have just received a reply.

In case there is anyone with Catholic ancestors in NSW OZ the website is

www.catholiccemeteries.org.au

and you can search nine catholic cemeteries.
