FaceBook item on Hartleys Village

Post by big g »

This article is on Facebook today:=
"Just off Long Lane in Aintree, Liverpool is Hartleys village. William Pickles Hartley was a Victorian jam manufacturer. He was also a strict Methodist and he cared passionately about his employees.
The Hartleys factory in Aintree opened in 1886 - it was a completely self contained site.
Homes for key workers were also built. The streets were lined with trees and residents were provided with gardens, tennis courts, fields and a bowling green.
The streets in Hartleys village were named after the ingredients used in making jam. Some streets such as Red Currant Court and Cherry Row have disappeared. But Spice Street and Sugar Street still survive.
I believe the factory closed in the 1970s. The houses still survive but the gardens, tennis courts and bowling green have all gone. The trees and the Victorian lamp posts have also disappeared. William Pickles Hartley had a villa on Long Lane and that has been lost too.
A lot of the factory site still survives and a number of companies now occupy the site. You can still see the old factory chimney, the old turreted entrance and the dining hall (see photographs below) for example.
A considerable part of the factory has been lost though - the old railway line has been pulled up and its three great warehouses and the factory clock have all gone. As recently as 2010 the old transport depot on the site was demolished"
It was posted by "The Liverpool no one knows" site. There are recent photo's also.
