Church in Toxteth Park Cemetery

Hi

I'm just curious about the disused church at the cemetery, does anyone know what it is called, when it was last used and why it stopped being used. Such a shame to see buildings being neglected.

You got me there, sorry I don't know the area but somebody else might do. I did look on the maps c1900 - is the one you are looking at on Hartington Road? there appears to be two, one called St Bede's is over the road from the Cemetery but there's another without a name on it in between Hartington Road and Lesseps? Street, perhaps you can identify if this is the one you mean?

I think the chapel within the cemetery has been disused since the 1980s - it's been like that for as long as I can remember. A shame as it's a Grade II Listed building.

Thanks for your replies, yes the chapel is the one actually within the cemetery grounds. I cann't understand why even if it is not used anymore it has been allowed to become a virtual ruin. Does the City Council own it?

Thanks for the photo Karen, isn't it a lovely building. I suspect it's no longer in use as funerals would probably take place in a local church and then interment at the graveside.

Are there still burials taking place in that cemetery?

Thanks for the pictures Bert it is nice to see inside, I know some land is consecrated & some unconsecrated (I think that is to do with churches or religion in general is that right?) my Grandmother was buried in the family plot with her father, 3 daughters, and her brother in the unconsecrated part, but her mother is buried in another section on the otherside of the main roadway through the cemetery and I think she is in a consecrated part. Her mother was the first to die Would there be a reason for that?

Have you checked to see if there was a coroner's report involved? Inquest diary is at the Record Office.

It may be that the family couldn't afford to purchase a private grave at that time, but possibly became more affluent later.

The chapels in Allerton Cemetery are in similar limbo. One in Anfield Cemetery is the subject of efforts by the Friends of Anfield Cem to have it restored and used as a heritage and research centre.

Unconsecrated sections would be used by non-conformists ie people who were Protestants but not Church of England. Also called Dissenters.

Yes, it is still used for burials.

The lodges at the entrance to the cemetery were sold several years ago as houses.

I think you may both be right, my Great Grandfather was possibly better off by the time he died in 1905, and the family may have been Methodists.
