Pilgrimage
I've just about completed my family tree and am planning a pilgrimage to visit my great-grands resting places, where they lived, went to school.... Since I've never visited the Liverpool area I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. Are there any recommendations on where to stay that is centrally located? Should I rent a car or is public transportation sufficient to get around? Any insight anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Pilgrimage
Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm sure you are going to get a number of helpful replies on here but would you please give us more information about where you want to go as although Liverpool isn't a huge place in terms of distance, actually getting around to various locations will be a different matter, for example you may want visit Toxteth Park cemetery in the south side of the city and a street out in Fazakerley in the north side.
If many of the places are outside the centre of town and you want to get around half a dozen places all in one day, it could be that just a day's hire car might suffice, but you may not need that if the majority of the places are in the centre of town.
Where to stay is of course depending on your pocket but if you want to stay in town there are a number of hotels/travel-lodges, the Campanile is on the waterfront and near to the Albert Dock, or the Marriott is more central.
Googlemaps https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview is a great site, use it to plan where you want to get to and the best route, but also use the streetview to see what the streets look like now and whether there is anything still left from the dates you are interested in.
Don't miss our wonderful new library in William Brown Street, where all the archives are kept in the Record Office on the 3rd floor. Our Society hosts a Help Desk there each Tuesday afternoon between 1.30 - 4.00 pm where we can help you find any records you are still searching for.
We also have our meetings on the second Tuesday of the month http://www.liverpool.liverpool-genealog ... endar.html where you will be welcome.
If there is still research you need to do in the Record Office, it is often easier to email the staff at the library with the details (example church where a marriage took place AND the year) and ask them whether the items you need are on microfilm, which is freely available, or whether it is only available in document form in the archives and you need to book for this - 24 hours notice required.
You may want to visit our museums, the new Museum of Liverpool, Maritime and Slavery Museums are all near the waterfront, but easily walkable from hotels nearer the centre of town.
So I would suggest to do your homework first and make a list of places you want to go and things you want to do, and we can help from that.

Re: Pilgrimage
I stayed at the Campanile near the Albert dock last year and found it more than adequate. If you do hire a care there is off-road parking. It's an easy walk to the city centre and public transport.
I'd endorse everything Mary said about the museums and if you can visit the society help desk you'll be made more than welcome.

The new library really is a must.
Liverpool is a great city to visit - you may find that you don't have enough time to cram everything in, so careful planning is essential.
As Mary says, let us know where your interests are.
