I've got a g x 5 grandmother who is a widow.
Called Margaret Young.
Would this be her late husband's surname or her
Maiden name?

If its her late husband's name I can try to look for the previous marriage to ascertain her maiden name etc.

It should be her married name unless for some reason she has gone back to her maiden name or is using the name of someone she is or has been living with. Sometimes separated women identified as widows to hide a break-up or to make it easier to marry again if their spouse was still living.
