Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
I have traced the Varley family from Lancashire to Aysgarth Yorkshire. I have found this marriage on Ancestry which fits with the children born to Samuel and Jane Varley. I cannot find an image which might help me further with Jane. I cannot find her birth.
Any help appreciated Thanks Lynne

Could you either give us some dates or tag this query onto a previous post with the details included.lynne99 wrote: I have found this marriage on Ancestry which fits with the children born to Samuel and Jane Varley.

Thanks Blue. I am an idiot
The Varley family are originally from Hornby Lancaster. They move about an awful lot.
I think the family in Hornby have father John (Died 1761, Hornby) and Mother Elizabeth (died 1791 Hornby age given as 75, from that birth c 1714) I believe they were Quakers.
https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... =2&t=15443
is the link back to the later family.
I cannot find the marriage or births for this couple. I do have 8 Children, one with the unusual name of Elihu which is found through the generations. These were born 1740 to 1757, all in Hornby.
Their son Samuel, born 1746, I think, moves to Burton in Aysgarth parish (Yorkshire) and marries Jane Richardson in 1772. They also have a child called Elihu.
I would like any info about either of these couples, especially birth details for Jane Richardson or John and Elizabeth.
oops I forgot to say that Jane may have had a brother? Ralph Richardson ( D 1838), who left money in his will to Jane's daughter Elizabeth (Betty) . All this found on Anc with help of Hilary Thanks

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
I don't think the images are online for this parish so all you have online is what is on Family Search, basic transcripts. For access to the images see the Genuki page I posted it lists where the records can be accessed.

Thanks Blue, I have looked at the links you sent. I don't get on with the UKBMD site as I can't find my way round it. I will ring the record office in the morning and see if they can help me. Thanks Lynne
What I meant to say was I would not have found that page without your help. Thanks

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
There might be something for the marriage on FMP (I don't have a subscription to check) if you do a search on there it shows various results including one that has an image. FMP is available free in LCC libraries. Certainly worth following up.

I don't know if it available in Rugby. I don't know any one with a subscription either. It looks like it will be worth chasing up. Thanks

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
Thanks Blue your help has been very helpful. I had already sent to North Yorkshire and asked them to send a copy. I will let you know when I get it and what info it contains. The next thing is to find Jane Richardson's birth/ baptism. I have had no luck. I suppose that is on FMP as well
I remember you saying that you did not have FMP, but could see the search. I have now find several promising Jane's . Thanks again.

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
The one that is the most probable on FMP is 1749 in Aysgarth. The same one on Anc and Family search gives the year as 1748. Why is this? The only thing I can think of is the change in calendar from Julian to Gregorian, but I thought this happened in 1741. Just looked it up and this time it says 1750. So that is the confusion. So which year could she have been born?
Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
It 'd probably be cheaper to buy some credits for FMP or go to your library than asking North Yorkshire Record Office for a copy which they will charge you for and will charge for the postage. Their fees look quite interesting!

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
Thank you both. I have tried to find Thornton in Yorkshire and the one that google maths comes up with is by Bradford, a long way from Aysgarth. What do you think?? Any other ideas.
I definitely think it sounds good. Thanks

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
As the baptism found is in Aysgarth it is likely that the family lived within the Parish. If you look on Genuki for Aysgarth you will see all the hamlets, villages and towns that make/made up the parish. One of those is Thornton Rust. Just as Burton in the local registers was actually West Burton, Thornton would actually be Thornton Rust
I can see Thornton Rust in my road atlas 2 or 3 miles west of Aysgarth, West Burton being about a mile south of Aysgarth.

Re: Samuel Varley and Jane Richardson
I know you are stars and at the moment I must be dense, but please can you help me again. I have a copy of Ralph Richardson's will saved on my computer. When I needed to look at again today , I find I have only saved the codicil. I only have ancestry so it must have come from there, but today I can't find it. He died in 1838 in Aysgarth Yorkshire or West Burton. The will was written in 1837. Please help me find it I must be doing something wrong. Thanks
