Hi, can anyone help on this. One of the family tree lived in Cork, died in Scotland, but the will was sealed in London. I tried ordering a copy online via the gov.uk website, but received this response a couple of weeks later:
Good morning, order entered 08/04/2016 for Percy Ross search details show Sealed in London and are not available.
If a grant has issued in a former Colonial country on an approved list and there was estate in England & Wales a grant may be resealed here rather than a new application made. I these applications the original will not be held and copies of resealed grants are only available for fifty years.
If you require a copy of grant that this been resealed or of the will you are advice to seek one from the Original Court where it issued.
We are arranging to send refund for your order on to relevant Dept.
Can someone please enlighten me as to why this would be, and could I still obtain a copy from Scotland?
Thanks,
John

Re: Sealed wills
First time I've come across this. Apart from Blue's good suggestion it might be best if you approached the Scottish Courts and asked the question direct. We'd be interested in the answer too.JohnnyO wrote:Can someone please enlighten me as to why this would be, and could I still obtain a copy from Scotland?

Re: Sealed wills
Thanks for the comments. I went on to the Scotlands people website, and purchased a copy of his death certificate. I also found his marriage record, and now have a lot more information about his spouse. I wasn't sure whether I had the right person, but the death record thankfully proved it!
Unfortunately, the will records on that site only go up to 1925, so no joy there. Looks like I might have to contact the Scottish courts. It's no big deal if I don't get it. I thought he died single, so was more interested in who received the proceeds of the estate. His widow survived him, so would have inherited most if not all of it anyway.

Re: Sealed wills
I've not been lucky enough to find many wills but when I have they're a little goldmine.
