The John Kelly LANE mystery!

Post by plimmerian »

John Kelly LANE was born 05 April 1888 in Earlestown, Lancs to Hannah LANE a domestic servant. He was bapt on 11 July 1888 at the parish church in Earlestown but for some reason his mother is listed as Ellen!

In 1891 John and Hannah are listed at his grandfather Richard LANE's household in Earlestown.

(Hannah LANE married Peter PIMLOTT in 1893 at Chorlton Reg Off.)

In 1901 John is missing, he is not in his mother's household, so I suspect he may be Frank SIMM age 13, at the same address in Earlestown as his grandmother LANE - was he unofficially adopted by Hannah's sister Emily SIMM?

By 1911 John LANE is found at 169 York Street, Hulme, Manchester - a boarder age 22 as an iron miller. His mother Hannah is living at 184 York Street, Hulme in the same census.

(Hannah would later marry James Ernest LINDLEY at Chorlton Reg Off in 1937)

I am wondering what happened to John Kelly Lane? Was he a victim of WW1? Did he emmigrate? Or did he use a different name all together when he left the area? So many unanswered questions, struggling to piece his life together!

Thank you for reading this tale.

Is there a chance that he is the son of a sister of Hannah - ie Ellen? do you have the birth certificate or only the baptism? I know that doesn't answer the question where he went to later.
