Decipher register entry please

My gggf was in the Royal Irish Constabulary. This is part of the entry for him in the R.I.C. register. He was 'Injured on back by a
something of a
something'. An ideas? He was barracked in a small town/rural area, plus he would have done some spare time farming.

Looks like Claw of a something.
But what do all those numbers mean?
Are those words actually a continuation of Injured on back by a .....
All very confusing to me, but I don't admit to being good at deciphering writing

I think this is from a 'main' register, which logged a summary of an event and referenced detail records elsewhere with those numbers.
There is an interesting story somewhere of how, after Independence, the command went out from Dublin Castle (centre of British admin.) for records to be destroyed. Some eventually found their way to Kew, ended up dumped in a basement, and the fact that anything survives is credit to a single civil servant.
I think 'Injured on back by a something of a something' is the summary of a single event that occurred on 22/1/1882. The other one is 'Ankle inj[ure]d.' on 24/1/1883. The timings are interesting, being the same time in consecutive years. I wondered about some annual event. But I'm pretty lost.

Thanks Barbara. The second word does appear to start with 'Ste..' I've spent most of my time wondering what
else it could be - never thought of 'steer'! I don't hear the word much these days but it's used in the US... and if it's used in the US it would have been used historically here.
