Some speculation please

Could the forum take a look at an old newspaper article (from 1835) featuring my great, great, Grandfather Jacob FLETCHER and his death aboard the Liverpool floating bath.
I was recently involved in some research with my Cousin in law on the battle of Trafalgar and it turned out that one of his CASWELL ancestors was involved, actually on the Victory. It all made interesting reading.
The reason for this thread, is that during our research CADIZ was mentioned many times and you will notice that in the newspaper report Jacob was involved in some sort of fracas in that port. Any ideas on why he was there? And why would he have been assaulted? As Jacob sailed with Cpt Scoresby its rather odd as Scoresby was a whale hunter usually off Greenland. any guesses
from the Forum would be most helpful.
Thank you. Gareth.
PS Jacobs Wife was Mary and his Father was William, Keeper of the Liverpool Bridewell.

I have looked on FMP at the articles referred to. The one reproduced above is from 13th June 1834 (not 1835). The original article appeared 31st January 1834.

British Forces were stationed at Cadiz between 1810-1814, Captain Scoresby was certainly whaling at that time. I don't know whether Jacob served with Scoresby then, but its possible the army would have relied on Whale products. Perhaps the Captain plied his trade in those waters as well as further North. As for Jacob being assaulted, naughty sailor I assume.

Thanks Alex.
Yes you are right about the 13th June date 1834. Nothing wrong with my records, just something wrong with my fat fingers
Bert thanks for your input. Good reasoning in there, just one thing, Jacob had a pretty good reputation, as stated in the report, but of course that would not have stopped the locals having a go. I suspect the British sailors were not too popular at that time.
Alex back to you. What did you mean when you said the original article was 31st Jan 1834? As Jacob died in the summer of that year. was it in fact the report of him swimming for hours fully clothed? Sorry got my dim head on today.
Take care. Gareth.
