Hello, My Grandad had a shop in Birkenhead, 26 Park St which was close to the docks, he is listed in the 1911 Census as being a Coal Merchant and General Dealer, I know from his daughter (my Auntie) it was also a grocers and grandma was a milliner and dressmaker working from the same premises, His name was Daniel Archibald he was born in 1870 in Macclesfield, he married Letitia Amelia Walsh ne Bowler( her first husband died,) she helped him run the shop, and when he died in the 1st world war she took over, I am trying to find out if either were mentioned in the trade directories, and also are any old photos still around of Park St or even the shop, which I believe was on a corner, I realise that is a long shot but many years ago I seem to remember seeing a photo that Auntie had sent her about the time Park St was redeveloped. Wish I had taken more notice at the time!!

you can just see 26 Park St and opposite in Brook St, the area where 122 would have been.

Thank you so much, My Auntie told me so much about the shop where she and my mum were brought up and I would love to have a photo of it, but you have given me the next best thing, thanks again, I know that grandma returned to Macclesfield where she lived as a child, but I am not sure when she left the shop, I am sorry that all the houses were knocked down as they looked quite nice, Cheers Granny Mo

The 1923 Kelly's directory has a Thomas Robinson, Shopkeeper, 26 Park St, Birkenhead.

Trying to narrow down when they left the shop, Daniel's medal card has the address of, C L Archibald, 288 Peter St, Macclesfield. The Medal Cards were created towards the end of the war, perhaps someone with better knowledge could contribute when the completion date for entries was.

Hi Birt, So kind of you to go to so much trouble,The family were Catholic, have you any idea which school the girls would have gone too, Christina Letitia (Tina) was born in 1908 and her sister Mary (my mum) was born 1912, I cannot remember auntie Tina telling me that either went to school in Macclesfield, so i had assumed it was after 1926 when mum would have been 14, that they arrived in Macclesfield, maybe they left the shop and lived somewhere else.Grandma died in 1940 so thats why Daniels Medal card was sent to auntie Tina, My brother had Daniels medals and since his death they have disappeared, he served in the Boar war in 1900 and lied about his age so he could be in a combat unit in the first World War, I have a photo of him at Cheshire Reg Training Camp in 1915 as acting Ser Major DCM He was killed 5mths later, I have no idea what other medals if any he recieved,

The girls schooling in Birkenhead would likely have been at St Laurence's Catholic Girls School, Park St, Birkenhead. My thoughts on the Medal Card, the address was added around 1918 ish, an address for the Medals to be dispatched to, that being different from the address the Army held.

I have seen that article before about David Archibald (alias dan Maloney) I was a little confused at first then looking back at the census's realised his mothers maiden name was Maloney, so it all fitted in,
I have managed to go back quite a way with my family tree but really now I am trying to find out more about their lives, I wish I had listened more when Auntie told me her tales, you have been so much help, I was born in Macclesfield and go back frequently so i will now try and find out if my mum and auntie went to school at St Albans, which was the only catholic school in the area, Thanks again.
