An Irish Question

Spurred on by Julie Walters in WDYTYA on Thursday I've been revisiting my Irish side - and not getting very far!
I have John Brown marrying Bridget Duffy in 1878 in Tyrone so I have both their fathers, Bryan Brown, Grazier and Peter Duffy, Farmer. I found Peter Duffy on the Griffiths evaluation and I think I also have Bryan who for some reason is recorded as 'Hugh' with Bryan in brackets.
The trouble is I can't get any further back with either family. I have found John and Bridget on the 1901 and the 1911 (Bridget's a widow by then). Any suggestions as to how to proceed backwards?
Another problem I have is finding any record of my Brown grandparents' marriage! James Brown, John's son was born in Tyrone in 1880 and moved to Barrow in Furness - he's recorded on the 1901 and the 1911. My grandmother was Bridget McCullagh also born Tyrone but unsure as to the date. I've searched every record I can think of but no luck. I'm just intrigued. The family story is that they eloped but I don't know how true that is.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Barbara

Blue, you're a star! I've been all over the place looking for them. It looks like the family story might be true. James must have come back to find her. The story was they eloped but she insisted on getting married before she'd get on the ferry....
My two aunts, their children who are in their 80s and 90s will be delighted with this bit of family history. Thanks once again, I think I'm going to order the certificate.

Thanks to Blue I've now received my grandparents' marriage certificate which has delighted my two aunts and resolved an 'argument'. We now know for certain that they married in Ireland. Still no further forward ( or backward) with the earlier generations. Any help would be very gratefully received by me and Maggie and Josie - the aunties.

Hi Barbara,
How old was Bridget when she married and what was her father's name and occupation? There are 46 hits for the name in 1901 and 43 in 1911. In the latter there are 8 who are aged between 18 and 28.

I was rather hoping he would be an airline pilot. There weren't that many in Tyrone in 1911! :D

Bridget was 20 when she married and her father was John, a farmer. The nearest to an airline pilot is my uncle Jimmy who was in the air force during the war (and my Dad who spent the war as ground crew in Scarborough)
What I'm stuck with is getting any info further back. I know my Brown great grandparents were Bryan and Bridget nee Duffy and her father was Peter Duffy as I have their marriage certificate. I think my McCullagh g grandparents were Joseph and Jane possibly nee Hamilton but I can't find their marriage. They were all from the Plumbridge area of County Tyrone.
Any thoughts welcome
Thanks for the input so far.

Thanks to all for the quick response!
Bert, I'm pretty sure that's the right family in 1911. Bridget's daughter, my aunty was born in Sawelabeg.
DS, the witnesses were Mimmie McCullagh and Paul O'Neil - the priest's name was also O'Neil, possibly a relative?
Bert, Bridget's father is Joseph on the certificate, James' father was John. Did I write it wrong - sorry!
Blue, the addresses on the certificate were Carrowertra for James and Sawelabeg for Bridget so I think that confirms that Bert found the right family.
Where to now?
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I suspect the witness is Minnie, possibly Bridget's sister, Mary.

No luck yet, marriage, Joseph and Jane.

I would take a punt and get Bridget's birth cert.

I would go for a birth year of 1891, perhaps, DS, can advise if an Irish birth cert can be ordered naming the father and the mother Jane, no maiden name. If no match, money returned.

Using the indexes on Roots Ireland the following Births or Baptisms appear to be on there for this family. They all appeared after entering the father's name as Joseph and mother's name as Jane Hamilton. No sign of the parents' marriage:-

1891 Bridget McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Badoney Upper RC
1892 Mary Ann McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Badoney Upper RC
1894 James McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Badoney Upper RC
1896 Jane McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Civil Registration
1898 Maggie McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Civil Registration
1900 Alice McCullagh, Joseph McCullagh, Jane Hamilton, Civil Registration

There's someone called Mel1oo on Ancestry with a tree for this family. They have a photo of Jennie McCullagh's grave in Tyrone so may be descended from her. I thought this Jennie was Jane (as in "Ginnie") but this tree has Jane born 1896 and Jennie born 1898, died 1925. They have the mother as Jane Hamilton.
