Have I got the right person?

Hello again Everyone

I am researching Malcolm Gibson's family, I am his great grandaughter and I introduced him to the forum on the St Cyprian's project he was the M Gibson on the memorial.

I have been researching his parents and Grandparents.

I did not have a picture of Malcolm but I do have a photo of his father supplied by a cousin twice removed in USA. that I met online. I am adding here so you can see him.

Image

Malcolm's Parents are David Gibson & Janet Allan. They married in 1883
see their Edited Marriage Certificate.

Image

David's parents are William Gibson and Christine Gibson, I am not certain what her maiden name is can you help?

I have tried a few variations of what I thought it was and cannot find any scottish certificates.
If I read this correct the maiden name of Janet Allan is McKay

When I searched for her parents marriage certificate I can only find Thomas Allan and Janet McKie will this be the correct one and a name variation on the certificate, I can't find any McKay in births or marriages.

Also if it is correct can anyone help me discover what is written, I can not read lots of it. I see the parish is Girvan. I can not make the county

I can not make out the either maiden name of the Allan mother or first name or maiden name of McKie mother can anyone help?

Not sure on the address or occupations either. As you can see not much at all. So disappointed :(

see certificate

Image

I thought I would get it on Janet McKay birth certificate but there are 6 of them and none look right to me it has minimal information as well.

These are scottish certifcates hence the different area, Malcolm's family came to live in Liverpool after he was killed in action on 18th July 1916 at Flanders.

The family arrived here in 1918, my granddad was 4 years old and never left Liverpool apart from his stint at Highland light infantry in WW2 and the D Day Landings. He never lost his Glasgow accent.

Thank you for looking and good to share with you.

Kind regards

Marie

Hi Marie,
My take on the occupations of the bride and groom are....

David Gibson --- Rope spinner [Apprentice, Bachelor]
Janet Allen --- Woollen weaver, steam loom.

Re the 1856 marriage....
Elizabeth Allan ---- maiden name Colville?
Mary McKie ---- maiden name McDavies?

More looking to be done.....

I wonder if Janet had gone out to work perhaps as a servant by 1881, so looked at the 1871 and it might give a clue as to when her parents had married.

29 Hozier Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow Calton
Thomas Allen 42 Cotton Beamer Girvan, Ayrshire
Janet Allen 38 Bobbin Winder Cotton Glasgow, Lanark
Samuel Allen 14 Scholar Girvan, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Allen 11 Scholar Glasgow, Lanark
Janet Allen 8 Scholar Glasgow, Lanark
Malcolm Allen 3 Glasgow, Lanark
Margaret Allen 6 Glasgow, Lanark
William Allen 6mo Glasgow, Lanark

The ages of the children would fit with that 1856 marriage.

I would suspect that one or the other registrar wrote the name incorrectly, depending on what he heard - McKay or McKie, a Glasgow accent is broad isn't it?

There is another possible clue in the 1861 census
44 East Hope St, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark
Thomas Allan 33 Cotton Handloom Weaver, Ireland
Janet Allan 27 Glasgow, Lanark
Mary Allan 6 Scholar, Glasgow, Lanark
Samuel Allan 3 Glasgow, Lanark
Eliz Allan 9 Mo Glasgow, Lanark
Elizabeth Mackie 22 Sister in Law Cotton Mill Worker, Glasgow, Lanark
Ann Simpson 19 Boarder Cotton Mill Worker, Glasgow, Lanark

I wonder if Thomas really was born in Ireland - have you found him in later censuses and where does he give for his birthplace there?

Hello MaryA and everyone

I will search and see if I can find a death. Give me a couple of days and hopefully I will find a certificate that you can actually read. Had loads of certificate but those two on the site are almost impossible for me to read.

Thank you so much for your help I appreciate it.

I will keep you up to date ASAP. It might take a couple of days as this computer has 3% memory left and I have a new one but have to learn how to use windows 8 :( plus add my favorites and geneology links or I will forget them. I had been putting it off I have Vista business and loved it. Now the memory is so poor even removing the files, de frag and removing programs is not helping my computer freezes more than it actually works.

Take care

Marie

Good luck with that, I'm still on Windows 7 and think 8 looks daunting, let us know how you get on with it and also what you find.

I'm sure there's a way of transferring your links .... investigation needed, and which browser you are using.

Hi MaryA and Everyone

I am using Explorer 11 at the moment, I used to use Google Chrome as and when I needed but usually as the last resort when a site did'nt like Explorer. So not sure what I will go with.

I even had an issue turning the new one off, I can't cope with the whizzy screens so I had a mouse. I asked my son Adam who is 11 years old who is usually a whiz with computers how you switch it off. He has aspergers, I never asked how do you log it off so he does no more than press the power button to turn it off. I was a bit miffed lol and he said well you never asked how to log if off as if I was dumb lol well I am a bit where computers are concerned lol

It turned out after watching the video you put your mouse pointer on the bottom right corner of the screen click and a column appears it was the button like a thick sailors wheel, you click on that and it gives the option of logging out. So it was round the houses not impressed so far lol wish they still did vista us oldies don't like change ooooooooo does that mean I have aspergers too lol

Hope there is no tears before I master it!

Thanks for all your help and good to hear from you.

Catch you later

kind regards

Marie

Marie,

Have a look in to Classic Shell,

http://www.classicshell.net/

I don't have to use it myself with being on 7, I believe plenty on 8 do.
DS, who I think uses it or has done may be able to advise better than me.

Good luck.

Internet Explorer -
File>
Import & Export
Export Favourites
Choose the Favourites File as I believe it should include the sub folders
and save it, taking a note of where the Bookmark.htm file it
Then simply email it to yourself.
