Hi All
I want to get some parish records from Staffordshire. They were round 1820 and i have all the christening dates. Sorry to be thick but i have never ordered a parish record before. Would anyone know if i contact the church if it is still there or would i contact the record office in Staffordshire. The only ones i have were on Ancestry and i could print them off and they were in Liverpool.
Thanks for your help
Lin

The majority of Parish Records are passed to the local Record Office in the first instance, from there they may have been given (sold?) to Ancestry to enable online research. Some won't have been allowed to be given to Ancestry or other subscription sites by the church concerned, and those will be available only at the Record Office so long as they have been deposited.
Most RO's will have an online catalogue that you will be able to search to see if they hold the resources you are looking for, alternatively an email to them usually produces an answer.
If the particular registers aren't held at the RO, they can probably tell you if they are still held at the church.
Have you checked familysearch.org first of all? If they have the records there is now an availability to order a copy from them. Check here for the link to order

Hi Lin,
I'd say try a contact with a local Staffordshire family history society of which there are a number...
http://www.local-history.co.uk/Groups/staffs.html
To try and save you some dosh why post the names and dates so we can have a look for you? There are other sources besides Ancestry and you never know!

Thanks very much for that information. I have found some on Ancestry but there is no record to view. I will get in touch with Stafford.
Thanks again

Hi Dickiesam
Thanks for offering to look for me. I have 5 children who were all christened in St John's Burslem Staffordshire. I don't know if they are all theirs but i do know 2 of them definitely are. I do not know the mothers maiden name so i thought if i got these Parish Records it might tell me if they are all theirs. I don't know if parish records recorded the mothers maiden name even.
Marian Grocott and Eliza Grocott both christened on the 29/8/1819. Twins?
Jane Grocott christened 12/8/1821.
Edward Grocott christened 21/9/1823
Samuel Grocott christened 1825.
Their parents are Samuel Grocott and Ann ?
This was the case were Edward Grocott assaulted A Grocott in Ireland so i was expecting to find an Andrew or Anthony or something.
I know Edward and Samuel are theirs. There may also be more children. Thanks again

Hi lin
This page from Staffordshire BMD for post 1837 events may be helpful in identifying where records for pre 1837 events are being held:-
http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk/update.php
Are these parish records on Family Search? I was able to get free e-mailed images of church marriages from Holy Trinity, Northwood, Hanley, Staffordshire from 1892 and 1901 via Family Search. You need to click on Photoduplication Request Form and create a free account with them. If you can give them enough information to identify the records and they have copies they will e-mail them to you free of charge. Maximum of 5 requests at the moment and recommend anyone using the service only request every few months to be fair to the volunteers at Family Search.

If you got those christenings/baptisms from FamilySearch the actual 'ledger' page will not tell much more than you appear to have already. Unfortunately, the list of hits does say "No image available" against each one.

Thanks Dickiesam and Blue 70 I did try Family search as well. If they have the image they usually direct you to findmypast and then they say the record will be with you in 30 minutes. I did not know you could request them off Familysearch. I will look at that site Blue 70 and i now have the number for Staffordshire record office and i will ring them tomorrow. I think it's pot luck whether i will get the mothers maiden name but it's worth a try.
Thanks again for all your help

All these baptisms have a Family Search microfilm number of 1278910 there's a good chance they'll have them. I doubt they will give you the mother's maiden name though. You might just get the father's occupation and their address as extra information. If you request them request both the twins just in case they appear on separate pages:-
Eliza Grocott - 29 Aug 1819

Marian Grocott - 29 Aug 1819
