US help please.. Ancestry/Find a Grave?

Hi everyone
Has anyone used Find a Grave site?
Trying to get more info re this entry and not having used this site before can anyone vouch for it at all? also would the chap who put this entry on have done so because he is related to Alice or just because he is a volunteer transcribe?
underneath the entry it says 1 death cert for Alice Looney Oklahoma but am I right in thinking that this is not necessarily hers?
Alice Rudd Looney
Born Nov 4 1879
Died Apr 15 1971
Highland Cemetery
Lawton
Comanche County
Oklahoma
USA
Whilst I'm asking, can anyone see anything pertaining to this entry on Ancestry US? Alice was my grandfather's aunt and I believe she left for US in the 20's.
Thanks a bunch mateys

Hi Simone,
Re:
Created by: David Woody - Record added: Sep 18, 2011. Find A Grave Memorial# 76684006
I'd say he is almost certain to be a volunteer transcriber/photographer for the site.
To me it looks like the right Alice. If this is her leaving the UK, it would one huge coincidence to have the same birthday and middle name [her maiden name].

yes definitely them Brian, thanks

family were still at 116 Aubrey st for years to come
have you had any experience of Find a Grave site.... cost of image of grave £12, but not done anything like this before from a US site, so don't want to find it says £12 and then other additional charges added!

I have used the site before to locate the grave of a Korean War [and personal] hero who had married my foster sister in 1945. I didn't buy a photo or anything because I had a contact in the US who could do the visit for me etc.
The fee sounds reasonable and in line with the charges sometimes made for photos of gravestone memorials in the UK.

Thanks Brian.. it's really my sister who is asking as she remembers Aunt Alice, I didn't know her at all. I'll wait and see if anyone else used them, but I too thought fee reasonable in comparison to other records we pay for...

Just been on the site [remembered my password!] and when I clicked Request a Photo there was no mention of a fee. A message came up to say.....
Great News! We have 87 volunteers within ten miles of your Request A Photo location and an additional 553 volunteers within fifty miles.
To register your request for a photo of Alice Looney's monument and automatically send out an email to the top photo volunteers in the area, simply click the 'Submit Photo Request' button below. If you have any specific information that would help someone find the grave, please enter it in the notes field below. It will be included in the email sent out to the photo volunteers.

I would think there may be a nominal fee to cover travel expenses, gas etc.

just tried myself and got this message
There is an existing photo request for this memorial. Memorials can only have one photo request attached to them...

found this re fees
Find A Grave's Photo Request System is a network of volunteers, helping others freely. Please do not request any money for your photo volunteer service. Doing so violates the spirit of the volunteer system and is against Find A Grave policy. Repeated abuse of this policy will result in account suspension

Oh BH! That was me doing a test run. So sorry! I goofed...
I will pass on any responses I get to you as soon as I get them and try to correct the screw-up.
I could maybe give them your email address if you sent it via a PM.

Loving your banter and hope you get it sorted out with the photograph.
Just had a look at an entry I had recently found in my own tree, a nice piccie of the cemetery and even an obituary that was uploaded, and a link to one of her children
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... d=98313440 but not of the gravestone. However, I did look at the links below
underneath the entry it says 1 death cert for Alice Looney Oklahoma but am I right in thinking that this is not necessarily hers?
mine said that there were two birth certificates, and on clicking this it took me to Ancestry with the long list of births, deaths, obituaries etc. mainly in USA which wouldn't be applicable as she was born in England, strangely it listed death entries but the Probate entries listed two people with the same surname, and as it is an unusual one I know they are related to her in-laws.
So worth clicking on and going down the list to see what they will tell you for free, or you will see all if you have an Ancestry subs.
Good luck with getting the photograph.

I don't have Ancestry at the moment, but it offered me a 2 week trial for US or worldwide records so tempted to do that

Don't bother Simone, this is the entry
Name: Alice Rudd Looney
Birth Date: 4 Nov 1879
Age at Death: 91
Death Date: 15 Apr 1971
Burial Place: Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma, USA
All it does is give the above information and link back to the Findagrave site, this is what is available on Ancestry.co.uk.

Ahh thanks Mary.... I might give it a go if only to get her census entries, will have a think about it.
Been out of the loop lately

need to get myself organised...dad passed away at Easter

and I lost heart with all this, difficult remembering talking to him about it and asking things, but seems to have ignited my sister's interest, certainly in this side of the family. As I say, she remembers them and they were very fond of her, so helping her out at the moment really

Hi Simone,
Because Alice Looney and hubby John didn't go to the States until 1957 they will not be in any available US census. You might get their arrival in the US from Ancestry and an intended address though.
All quiet on the photo front so far! Maybe the inundation of volunteers is coming by stealth!

Ahh thanks Brian
Not sure about that John

looks like it would be him, but think he should be married.... I have her in 1911 with her father Thomas William Rudd and mother Lucy at Queens Road, Everton. She has the boys with her and has been married 7 yrs 11 months, but no sign of John at this time

wonder if he was on a trip to USA.
will sort myself out later and get back on ANC*
