Moon Family after 1901?

Post by dickiesam »

This has been bugging me for a couple of years. Where is this family in the years after 1901? Hoping the additional eyes here can help.

I have the Moon and Day lines back to pre-1800. I know where and when the parents died as well as two of their children. It is one of the latter I am particularly interested in. Gladys Brady nee Moon was the mother of three children, all born in Liverpool in 1922, 1924 and 1929. They were orphaned in 1931 and after a period in the Myrtle Street Orphanage eventually became my foster-siblings. I know what happened to those children in later life and I know where Gladys was from 1922 to her death in 1931 and believe she was in Liverpool sometime before that. The 3 children's births were registered as Brady although the parents didn't marry until 1928. Her common-law MN husband was already married and could not marry Gladys until his first wife died in 1927. At her marriage Gladys stated she was a spinster.

My maternal g.parents, and my mother, knew the Brady family well, hence my parents fostering them. I would like to have something to put in the gap between 1901 and 1922.

Now that does stump me, Simone! Either there is a huge transcription error or the family were missed? I don't think any of them left the country for places 'abroad', and I have looked at Ireland and Scotland as well.

Can't see Gladys on her own either, and a search for the parents without a surname but born in Cornwall, turned up nothing. Weird!

I knew Dickiesam has a subs to FMP so I've tried a variety of all our usual methods in Ancestry, thought bound to be a mistranscription that showed up right on one of them, but even using just first names and place they are living hasn't shown up anything. Different family living in the same house too, so they have moved on. Even tried IOM, CI and Wales.

Tried variations on Gladys/Gwladys too, no joy.

There's a family using initials for first names, but they don't match up.

YEP I've been flitting back and forth between Ancestry and FMP.... even used no names with places, names back to front, initials, just engineer as occupation with year of birth... stumped.. reckon they have been missed off :(

I wonder if this could be a clue?

Death of Leslie Wilfred Moon June 1986, birth 2 October 1900 age 85
South Staffordshire 30 1054

Marriage of Leslie W Moon to Emily Tucker Q3 1925 Bristol, Gloucestershire 6a 400
No obvious children to this marriage.

I should add that I know another one of the children, Olive Constance Moon - born 1898 in Bristol, was in Liverpool in 1930 and 1931 looking after Gladys who had become very ill.

My g.mother and my mother called her the 'Evil Aunt Olive' because it was she who put the children into the local Myrtle Street Orphanage and ignored the protestations of both my g.mother and my mother. They had both had offered take the children in. The eldest, a boy, was 'released' into the outside world in 1936 and went to live with my g.parents. In the following year my parents managed to get the next child released into their care and the youngest one in 1943.

Leslie's father was an engineer and had his own metal machining business. He had specialised in working with brass and bronze so perhaps moved to the Midlands where a lot of metal engineering was going on.

I had hoped Ancestry might throw something up so, while it is obviously very frustrating to do so, I think I am going to hang my hat on this one and hope I have another 7 years left in me while I wait for the 1921 to be released!

Hi DS,

I've been having a go at this on and off all day, if they went abroad its not on Anc, it's as if they have been missed out in 1911. Found an obit for a Percy Reginald Charles Moon, aged 93, 2004, Bristol, but he would have to be one of the sons.

I'll bet you a tenner now you're here for the 1931 census.

If I am I will have got one of those letters from the Queen, or possibly a King by then! Maybe Queen Kate will be on the throne? Wouldn't mind getting her autograph. :P

He's not the right Percy, Bert... My Percy is alive and well in 1901. The other one you found is this one:
Birth: MOON, Percy R C
Registration district: Bath, Somerset
Year of registration: 1910; Dec qtr

Thanks for looking.

I know, DS,

He could only have been one of the sons of the children on the 1901, unlikely though.

I think he would be the son of Oliver (born Camerton, Somerset) and Rose Moon (born Southstoke, Somerset), and was 5 months 2 weeks old in 1911, born Tunley, Somerset.

Unfortunately none of us will get to view the 1931 Census because the records were destroyed in a fire.

And it doesn't look as though it can be reconstructed....

From: http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums ... 931-Census
In theory the 1931 census for England & Wales would have been available for public access in 2032 or perhaps earlier if rules were to be changed. However that is not to be.
On the night of Saturday 19 December 1942, there was a fire at a store in Hayes, Middlesex. The store, the responsibility of the Office of Works, contained a large amount of furniture but in addition it contained the census records for England & Wales for 1931, that is the whole of the schedules, enumeration books and plans. They were all completely destroyed.

Now what are the two words I am thinking of..... one is 'Oh', the other begins with b and ends in r, with 4 letters in between!

And even the later National one won't do you much good as you need to know addresses anyway.
