mothers name for Herman Neuling

Hello again,
I have had so much luck in the past few weeks looking up my mothers family that I would like to ask one more question --- and if I dont find any answers its OK.
My grandfather Hermann Neuling was born in Hanover Germany in 1865, I dont know the month, he moved to England before 1888 because that's when he married Catherin O'Brien in St Patrick church.

I was always told my grandfather was Protestant and his mother was Jewish but since he married in a Catholic church and is buried in Ford Cemetery Liverpool I have to assume he was Catholic or turned Catholic when he married .

I did find out Hermann's fathers name was William Neuling --- because he put it on his marriage certificate --- the question I need to find out is what was his mothers name?, in the past I have been told [ by family members] that he was born [ or lived] in Leipzig Germany only to find out he was born in Hanover Germany.

After 2 World Wars I dont know if there is much information still around, but if by chance someone is able to stumble on any I would appreciate it.

My mother told me she was named after her grandmother [ she did have a middle name Ellen but that was from her grandmother on her mothers side] and we were told my grandfather [ Hermann Neulings] mothers maiden name was Symour --- I dont know if thats the right spelling, thank you, Mavis

Hello thanks for the reply,
My mothers name is/was Doretta Ellen Neuling, I was under the impression my grandmothers maiden name was Seymour -- or something like that, I could be wrong, but I do know my Grandfather put his fathers name on his marriage certificate as William.and my grandfather was born in 1865,

Your grandmother was Catherine O'Brien, as established in your other post.

Herman and Catherine's children were John b 1896, Julius b 1901, Edward b 1903, Walter b 1905, and Dora/Doretta b 1907.

If you want to be absolutely positive you will need to order her birth certificate, easiest way is online at http://www.gro.gov.uk using the details Q2 1907 Toxteth Park 8b 174.

There are however baptisms online for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (RC)
Julius Peter born 28 Mar 1900 bap 8 Apr 1900
Edward born 15 Jun 1902 bap 29 Jun 1902
Maria Catherine born 11 Jun 1898 bap 19 Jun 1898

all with parents Herman Neuling/Newling and Catherine O'Brien.

and they married on 24 October, 1888 in St Patricks
both giving their address as 214 Beaufort Street, Herman's father is William and Catherine's is Daniel O'Brien.
The witnesses were Henry Engelhardt also of 214 Beaufort Street and Joanna Chapman of 230 Beaufort Street.

I think Mavis means great grandmother not grandmother.

Thanks Blue,

Your right I have all the information on my Grandmothers side [ Catherine O'Brien] the information I'm looking for is my Great Grandmother my Grandfathers mother she is German and was told she was Jewish, as I said her husband was named William Neuling --- because I saw it on a wedding certificate when Herman Married Catherine in 1888. I dont know if you have access to records in Germany but if you do, any help will be appreciated.

Looks like Dora/Doretta 1907 was named after her grandma?
Sorry no luck in the Mormons site.
Cyndi's list comes up with the following

There doesn't appear to be many German records available online so it's difficult following the Neulings back to Germany. I managed to get information about my German ancestors from a distant relation who wrote to the local authorities and visited the village where they came from. Germans often anglicised their names so your William will have been Wilhelm in Germany and Dora was probably Dorathea. Could the surname have been Sutemeier or Sultemeier? One thing to watch out for with German names is they often had two first names and used the middle name as their name. My ancestor John Peter Albach was known as Peter Albach.

Thanks Blue & Tina for your help, it was a long shot but I think I'll just forget the search and let my great grandmother's name remain a mystery, I was so lucky when I traced my fathers side that I though I would try and see how far back I could go on my mothers, ---- with the help of the people on the Forum I was able to solve a few "mysteries". my mother died in the 1970's I lived here in the USA and she in Liverpool so back then we didn't get many opportunities to "chat".

Many thanks to the people who have helped me, Mavis

Hello Tina, the link you sent me I checked into it, I may never "find" the right great grandmother but its interesting to look at the names and try to see if they have tried to keep a name in the family, I remember looking up the Hermann's and they loved to tag on a J. or P. as middle names, I did see a few John's and a Dora, even a Peter, --- I wish I had that "extra link" but its to late now, I do thank you for finding the site it does have a lot of information on it, Thanks Mavis

You're very welcome Mavis, I do know how you feel, I've thrown the towel in on my Giovanni from Italy. He couldn't read or write on arrival in Lpool. I have 12 different spellings of his surname, none of which Anglo Italian FHS could help me with...

Hi, just a PS for Blue & Tina,

Tina the German website you gave me is a fantastic one, it didnt help me " reach my goal of finding information about my G. Grandmother" because I didnt have enough family information to begin with but for people who need to use it --- its a good site, also the information you gave me Blue about the Germans having 2 names and using their middle name as their "first name" very confusing isnt it, I did look up the one Herman Albert Neuling born 1866 --- the poor little baby died in 1868, but that was a good lead, I clicked the button "anything" on Hermann Neuling --- hoping to find how he arrived in England from Germany --- he must have left Germany early in his life because he was married in Liverpool in 1888 at the age of about 22, but the only information I could find was a Hermann Newling on a 1901 census in Toxteth Park , they have under Birthplace, Germany, German Subject.

I'm sure if I had any information on my grandfathers middle name it would have helped, but I will keep looking over the site and see anything shows up ---- thanks again.

Hi Mavis, thanks for lovely reply.
Have you dabbled in the National Archives online?
Could be worth a try with the surname.
