Hello,
I am trying to locate any relatives in Australia who belong to Herman Neuling, he arrived there around 1911 -- I believe his wife's name was Mavis, his father was Hermann Neuling and his mother was Catherine O'Brien [ Neuling]. Hermann [ father] was Born in Germany and Catherine was bore in in Liverpool.

Welcome to the forum Mavis and well done making your first post.

I hope some of our forum members down under might be able to help, perhaps with a marriage for Herman in Australia or a date of entry into Australia.

Mavis, I was trying to narrow down the date when he might have gone to Australia, as he isn't with the family in 1911 it might be assumed that he went before the census in that year. Can you give us his date of birth?

Mavis may also need help about the family in Liverpool so I hope she will post any further queries on that board as that might keep research in the different countries separated.

I've managed to answer my query as to Hermann's date of birth which is apparently 1892 (per the 1901 census) RG13; Piece: 3432; Folio: 31; Page: 5.
Other known children are John (1896), Julius (1890), Edward (1893), Walter (1895) and Dora (Doretta) (1907).

It may be reasonable to assume that he left for Australia before census day 1911.

Hi everyone
There is a Herman J Neuling bn 1915 who left Lpool for Sydney in 1945
A long shot but has to be a family connection somewhere??
South Australia records have a big swing in years.
Birth Herman James Neuling 1907-1916
Death Herman 1916 to 1925
I'll try electoral rolls.
Edit also in 1945 to Sydney are Mavis E 1915, Raymond J 1944 & Sandra J 1942

Could there be a transcription error in that Herman's dob Tina? I can't find one that year, only one born Q2 1928, Liverpool, mother's maiden name Kirwan.

He would appear to be the child of Julius P who married Mary E Kirwan in 1923.

Raymond J and Sandra J were both born Bucklow, Cheshire, reasonable to assume that they would be connected to our family, however the mother's maiden name for these is Manning but I can't see a Neuling/Manning marriage, nor taking a punt that Mavis was Manning, can I see a birth in England for her, I suppose her origins could have been in Australia.

Possibly the Mary E from above remarried in Q2 1944 to somebody Brown.
Doretta married Robert J Redfern in Q1 1927 and again to Alfred E Dineley in Q2 1945.

Now Hermann J Neuling married Mark I Cunningham Q2 1951 reference Liverpool 10d 442 - strange!!!

It would seem worth while to get this certificate and check which Hermann it is, but I really do think it would be Julius's son.

Hi, I hope this gets posted I have not posted a reply before and this is going to be hit and miss ---- here goes

Herman Neuling 1892 Liverpool went to Australia after 1910, he was around 19 at the time, he married a Mavis Ethel in Australia [ dont know the date] ----- also his uncle Julius Neuling b. 1890 from Liverpool married a Mary ?, when Julius Neuling died in the war Mary married a Dominic Brown.

Julius was a merchant marine so its quite possible he visited Australia --- I know he visited his brother Walter in the USA.

Julius had a son called Herman also [ he must be about 84 now] and lives in Scotland with his wife June.

I dont know of any children that Herman [ who moved to Australia] had --- any information would be helpful, thanks everyone.

Now I have to hunt for the SUBMIT button.

Well done Mavis, you have succeeded in posting and replying.

The information you have given seems to confirm some of the findings.

I hope that Tina may discover something from the Electoral Registers or if anybody can point us in the direction of Marriage indexes.

Hi,
Looking over my last post I should have said Julius Neuling b. 1890 was Herman Neuling b.1892 " BROTHER'' not his uncle, ---

I did find out that Herman Neuling was in the Army but I hate to admit I found out he deserted around 1910, I had been told he "moved" to Australia --- I dont know if it was by his choice or the British goverment --- I dont know what they did with deserters back then ---- I was born in March 1939 and I was "told" I was named after Mavis Ethel Herman's wife, I'm sure I was told Herman [ I dont know if his wife was with him ] did visit England.

Herman's father [ also named Hermann] died in England in 1924 his mother Catherine [ O'Brien] Neuling died Liverpool 1945.

I haven't found a candidate for Herman leaving the UK as a passenger up to 1940. I suspect in the circumstances he may have signed on as crew on a merchant ship if he was on the run from the Army.

I do think if Herman Neuling visited England he must have been in the merchant marines --- if that were the case he came along and not with his wife, I do remember my mother telling me Hermans wife was named Mavis Ethel and I was named after her ---- so if I was born in March 1939 he must have visited England before then.

I did find out that Herman's brother John Neuling joined the Scots Guards under the name of Newling [ Not the German spelling Neuling ] and it looks like he was killed in France and was buried there.

thanks everyone for the help I wouldnt have done any of this with out your help.

What a success Tina, thank you!

Just to let you folk know that Mavis came on board via the Facebook page but had never used a forum before. Step by step we've been helping her there to get a foothold in here and she's done very well.

Me again
I think the Herman I listed as dying in Sth Oz may have married Caroline L Davey in Broken Hill N.S.W 1913.
She is listed as marrying again as Neuling in Sth Oz between 1917 & 1927.
Something else to pursue.

I think that is the result Mavis has been looking for, is there any way of confirming that it is the Herman she is looking for? even by applying for a marriage cert Tina?

Tina, you are a wonder what fantastic news. the people on Facebook and the Forum have done so much for me in the past week I want to say a BIG Thank you all, finding out John [ Newling] Neuling died in France in 1915 was sad to read and at such an early age, ---- in this one week I have learned that one uncle was a deserter from the army and his brother died fighting for England, I have even come across the "Elusive" Mavis Ethel. When I have spoken to people in the past I have told them, " if you want to learn about the past ask family members when they are alive " I forget that we now live in the age of the Internet, as I said before thanks for all the help, now I can share this information with my one living sister here in the states and my son and his children.
