Francis Valentine Roach in Australia

Hi All,

My uncle was Francis (Frank) Valentine (b 14 Feb 1926) Roach. He lived in Kirkdale - Blackfield St to be more precise. Frank got married about 1950, he then moved to Australia about 1963???. They had 4 boys.

The family lost touch with Frank about 1970.

Anyway, recently I managed to contact the NSW registry office and obtained a death certificate for Frank - he died in 1972 of lung cancer.

Ideally we'd like to find out what happened to Frank's family. I understand names, details etc of living people cannot be discussed on this forum - right?

They lived in NSW around the Bossley Park area (just outside Sydney)

Any ideas, help, or suggestions how I might start or make progress would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks, Alan

Hi Alan,
I think you should move your post to 'Other areas help' and amend the subject line to include the words 'in Australia'. That would catch the eye of our friends from down-under who might be able to help 'off forum' because we don't do research on living people.

Do you know where he married? It is very likely Frank was a £10 Pom who emigrated under the assisted passage scheme. I have sent you a PM.
Good luck,

Hi Dickiesam,

Makes sense, looks as though you've beaten me to it (moving to new area and amending subject line) - thanks!

Got your PM - thanks, I have information from the death certificate regarding addresses etc in Oz, but I wasn't sure whether or not I could post on the forum. The addresses are from 1972, my brother has visited said addresses, neighbours etc don't recall the Roach family. No surprise given that they lived there 40 years ago.

I'm not sure where Frank married, I assume somewhere around the Kirkdale area - I believe he was a £10 pom.

Hopefully some of our friends down under can help me out.

Cheers, Alan

Hi Alan,
I didn't move your post. Not in my remit to do so but I am sure one of our vigilant administrators did and amended the Subject line for you. :)

The marriage I sent to you via PM was registered in Liverpool North. That would have included the Kirkdale area. But now you have his wife's name and the names of 3 of their sons. I suggest looking for the birth of the 4th son, in the Sidney area. And then, thanking your lucky stars all the children were male, look for marriages from about 1972 when the eldest would have been abt 18.

The marriage took place in the 4th Quarter of 1953, unfortunately it hasn't been transcribed by LancsBMD nor OPC so it would have to be a parish register search at the Record Office to find out where.

Call me vigilant :D

Not sure if the marriage I discovered is the same as the one you had DS, mine doesn't say North after the Liverpool, but it is for a Francis V.

Ah sure, didn't I guess it was yourself!

This is the marriage:
Registration district: Liverpool North
Year/qtr of registration: 1953 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Volume no: 10D; Page no: 448.

Memory tells me that 'Liverpool' per se ceased to be a registration district in 1934, being split between Liverpool North and Liverpool South. That lasted up to 1969?

Strange - I checked it on Ancestry and it didn't have North, yet it's the same entry.

Sloppy transcription? The GRO Index definitely has 'Liverpool N'. Correction should be sent in to avoid confusion?

ROACH Francis Valentine born 14 February 1926; Christina (nee ****) born 19 December 1932; and three children; travelled per STRATHMORE departing UK on 7 March 1963 under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme

Edited to keep the privacy of probable living people. MA

Hi Tina,
"Thanks for the memory....." now that takes me back quite a way! I remember Dorothy Lamour had a hit with it. Probably before your time Teen. :D

I had found 3 children bn in Liverpool before the £10 trip so assumed there was a 4th child born in Australia. That should be relatively easy to find because Alan now has the mother's maiden name as well.

Hi D.S
Dorothy was one my late bro's faves.
The Sarong Girl!
deaths in N.S.W have Frank Valentine with his wife as Kathleen
Liverpool (NSW) rego district.
I've only looked in electoral rolls for Francis, will have another go, bearing in mind it wasn't compulsary for
migrants to vote.
N.S.W birth index goes no further after 1911.

Hi DS, Tina

I have the name of the 4th child and where they lived in 1972 in NSW.

The address and names of the children are on the death certificate for Frank. There is a lot more information contained than what I've seen for UK death certificates.

It looks as though Frank was cremated at Rookwood crematorium in NSW.

After 1972 I'm lost, my research grinds to a halt.

Any ideas how I get beyond 1972?

Regards, Alan

Hello Alan,
Well some progress in finding the 4th son.... So sad that Frank died relatively soon after arriving in the new country. I have to leave it up to the Down-under experts for research there but have a couple of suggestions.

1) It is possible, if not probable, that Frank's widow remarried, so look for a marriage. She was bn in 1933 so was quite a bit younger than Frank, and would have been only 38 when he died.
2) Depending on the family's circumstances when Frank died, they had been in Australia for less than 10 years, it is also possible his widow returned home with her 3 teenage boys and a youngster under 10.

I think you should try to find her parents and then living siblings/rellies for information. That would have to be done off-forum of course.

Good advice D.S.
Yes, widow may have re-married more than likely or returned to UK.
Alan, you could try telephone books at the following link, long shot but worth a try.
If you pm me with the Aussie born child's name, I'll get in touch with a pal of mine
over east as we say here in the west.
Cheers
