Annuitant

I have just found my 4x gt g/mother aged 65 in the1851 census and she is described as an "Annuitant" I did't think people had pensions then so any ideas as to what it means?

Annuitant defined: A person who is entitled to receive benefits from an annuity.

Either she or someone else has bought an annuity for her which pays money to her on a regular basis. Annuitant appear regularly in the census.
