Trade directories - Birkenhead - 1925 to 1950s?

Hi folks,
Trying to locate for a friend the whereabouts of a butcher's business in Birkenhead from about 1920/1925 onwards. The proprietor was Charles Jackson and the business is believed to have been in the Conway Street/Wallace Street area. We think it was still going in 1944 when Charles remarried, aged about 56.

Hi Erika,
That's brilliant! Many thanks. He was baptised Robert Charles but never used the Robert, always Charles first, so that has to be him. I reckon Watson Street may have been mis-remembered as Wallace Street unless he had more than one shop. Watson Street is off Conway Street. I am fairly sure it runs parallel to Cathcart Street where my wife used to teach in the primary school there.

Hopefully I'll get a later date as well to see if he was still there after the end of the war.

Thanks again, Erika.

Thanks Tina,
Every little snippet helps. I need a start date to eventually look for his death. I know he was there in 1944 when he married a widow who had, coincidentally, lost her first husband 70 years ago today 3rd May at the start of the May Blitz.

Hi D.S :)
My pal said after the war parts of the street are missing from Directories so perhaps were bombed?
In 1949 he has a Charles Jackson meat salesman for G G J Ltd, Rocky Lane Heswall.
All the other Chas Jackson's in Lpool.

I looked in British Phone Books, the Chas mentioned in 1949 was living there in 1939, the house called"Delafield", so not sure if this is your man.

Hi Tina and Doedoe,
It could be the same man Tina. Hoping to get the 1944 marriage cert for him that hopefully will tell us whether he still had a shop or was working for a meat wholesaler.

Doedoe, we know he had sons in the business so we are checking to see if one married a Freda X and opened the green-grocers next door.

Muchas gracias to both of you.

Hi Doedoe,
Thanks for that. We have actually found a marriage to a Freda that may be one of Charles Robert's sons, a Charles W Jackson. He may be the man that Tina found.

Name: JACKSON, Charles W
Registration District: Birkenhead; Cheshire.
Year of Registration: 1934; Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's name: LISTON, Freda
Volume No: 8A; Page No: 1281.

He could be the meat salesman? A natural progression?
