John Fairhurst born 19/4/1808 L.pool

Post by gray »

It is some time since I have added any further findings on this line but have been chipping away at it. I am adding just in case anyone from Australia or New Zealand may have an interest. Also the Fairhurst family in Liverpool.

At the beginning of my post, it was re John Fairhurst born 19/4/1808 L.pool my x3 G.uncle, he died 1845 Sydney. I found this so sad!

Here is an extract from the Tarban Creek Admission Register:

‘from Darlinghurst Gaol, to which he had been committed in default

of bail to keep the peace’.

It was observed he suffered from mania and a large ulcer on his leg.

16 July 1845. Died; exhausted; no lucid intervals;

on admission an ill conditioned ulcer on his leg of long standing.

Cause of Derangement: Reported Coup du Soleil.

Medical Certificate by: Col. Surgeon Richardson &

Col. Assist. Surgeon Silver Extracted from Tarban Creek

Admission Register - NSW State Records Item 4/7655.

It is stated that John was having hallucinations and was

“talking of going home with his Regis & he is to be King and his wife Queen”.

He had arrived ‘free’ on the ‘Formosa’ and had been insane 8-9 months.

He was a small eater and his speech was affected. The supposed cause of the problem was

felt it could possibly have arisen from a fall from a ladder.

I feel that together with the effects of alcohol and his long time use of the lead paint this could have assisted in the cause of his ‘mania’.

1883- renovations Renamed Gladesville Hospital fromTarban Creek Lunatic Asylum.

Always good to update a post with new information especially when there are others interested. Need to change the heading of the post though to make it relevant.
