Alexander Mackey Antrim N.Ireland
Alexander Mackey Antrim N.Ireland
I am hoping someone out there may be able to help in my research. Alexander Mackey was born in Antrim 1863/1864. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1883. He married in Cork in 1897 and is on the '11 census in Ballyhooley Cork. On his marriage certificate his father is also Alexander a farmer. I have been unable to find any baptism or birth record for the younger Alexander. I found two Alexander's both farmers in Magheregall, Lisburn and Ballynure, Larne. The one in Lisburn married a Sarah Hinds(Hynd) in 1868, he was described as a widower, there were 4 sons (that I know of) born to this marriage, recorded in Knocknadona. But also there are records of an Alexander/Sarah Hinds having a son in 1867 (Albert Ford). If I could find the 1st marriage of Alexander (the elder) even a death record for his wife (which would have been between 1864-1868 assuming I've got the right one of course). With regard to the Ballynure one, which I tend to favour, the parents were Alexander/EstherDrummond they married in 1862, according to available records their first child Jenny was born in 1864, but if according to custom the son is named for his father, then it is possible that Alexander the first son was born in 1863 before Civil registration. Both of these familes were either Church of Ireland or Presbyterian. Any help greatly appreciated. Moya

Hi Moya,
You said you had found Alexander in the Irish 1911 census. Here he is in the 1901:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... n/1142555/
If he was born before civil registration in 1864 I believe that because he was Church of Ireland his birth would still have been registered with the C of I registrations. From about 1845 Protestant registrations were the norm. These records are not online but held in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. http://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/42
From the site: Specific details can be checked for a fee but general genealogical research cannot be undertaken by the Library staff.
Unfortunately I don't live near Dublin so am unable to nip in and do a bit of browsing for you. However, I have found that a pro-researcher need not be too expensive considering the information you are trying to uncover. Sometimes less than the cost of a bundle of wrong certs!

Re: Alexander Mackey Antrim N.Ireland
I think only Protestant marriages were registered before 1864 in Ireland not births or deaths. Church of Ireland records on sites like Roots Ireland for County Antrim are incomplete and there's no sign of him on there. Family Search and Ancestry have a number of records for both families as you mentioned but it looks like Alexander has slipped through the net somehow. It's likely he was born in 1863 and just missed out on being recorded on the civil records.

Re: Alexander Mackey Antrim N.Ireland
Thankyou all for your input, sorry I put the '11 census, did mean the 1901. Alexander died in New Zealand in 1909. I thought I had cracked it when I found Alex/Mary Cummins marriage in 1856, but then discovered the Ohio USA connection. I contacted the person who had put this tree on Ancestry.com, but he didn't have any emigration records, but he did have a long list of siblings for Alexander b.1822, one of them being Robert b.1833 who also emigrated to Ohio. Their parents were James Mackey and Elizabeth Tippin, probably married about 1805. My last hope is the record of Alexander's service in the RIC which I have ordered but can't get until mid August. I am beginning to wonder if the information I am getting from my friend was "just found" on Ancestry and "made to fit", as whoever did it had Sarah Hinds as the mother, and she wasn't, as her marriage took place in 1868 and Alexander was born 1863/1864.
