Margaret Bishop 1810

Margaret Bishop about 1810 on Spike Island...On familysearch there is a John Bishop or McCanaspie 1808 born Spike island...I think he maybe the brother of Margaret I have found him on subsequent census's always born Ireland except once when he said he was born in Woolwich,,,but it was the McCanaspie ref that caught my eye..I have more info if you need it.

Spike Island? Presumably the one in Cork Harbour, one-time military fort and barracks, and much later the Irish version of Alcatraz.

The McCanaspie family I am chasing down are probably in Liverpool c.1845. The 'naughty' James' father was also a James, and in 1871 and 1881 he says he is from Liverpool. They were both slaters and plasterers.

I've found a Thomas, abt the right age to be a brother, also a slater/plasterer in Liverpool. He was bn abt 1838/40 but says he is from Dublin. Thomas' wife's name was Mary Fitzpatrick, from Worcester bn abt 1841. I found a marriage Liverpool Sep qtr 1862 and which I am hoping will prove or disprove a link to my James.

I don't have access to Anc*** so cannot avail of a search through the recently released collection of BMDs to see if the marriage is there before I order the cert from the GRO. I have posted a look-see query on the Liverpool forum.

Hi Ann,
Thanks for reply. That marriage was the first for my g.g.father James. His wife Alice died in 1875 and there were no surviving children from the marriage. By 1878 James had hooked up with Mary Emery and had a son by her, Thomas James McA; my maternal g.father. Mary already had 3 children with her legal spouse Robert Emery who had enlisted in the RA at the Fort in New Brighton in 1876. He 'lost' 6 years off his age when he enlisted so must have been pretty anxious to catch the boat to Ireland and then India. There is a strong case for assuming that that a daughter Ellen born in 1877, whose birth cert names Robert as father, was not actually his child. According to his military records he was 'busy' on St Helena about the time Ellen was conceived.

Robert was back in Liverpool in 1888 after 12 years with the 'Colours', working as a 'carter'. By 1889 he is a cab driver. Tommy Emery had already adopted the name Emery by 1898 and after Robert's death took over his cab. He remained a cabbie as an owner/driver until his retirement about 1950.

In both the 1881 and 1891 Mary calls herself McA not Emery, but there was no marriage. She even referred to herself as a widow in 1891 because James McA had died in 1890. Mary died in 1901 and Robert in 1904.
