Irish ancestors
Re: Irish ancestors
Hi Dickiesam
Thanks for all the hard work you have done.
You have found the right family John or Jack Shannon as he was known,
was born in Dublin and later sent back to Ireland, to a military orphanage with his brother Charlie after their mother died in 1893. I have a copy of a photograph taken of the brothers about 1900. Alice was also sent back to Ireland to live with her aunt Mary? She later joined her father in Liverpool and married my grandfather Robert Blakeley who lived in the next street.
I did spot the age of John Thomas as aged 10 to be a mistake.
We have Thomas Shannons son, Jack Shannons army records he won the military medal.
I reasearch the family history with the help of 3 cousins, one of the cousins has made contact with a decendant of Pat Shannon, and we exchange information, I think you are right this will be a brick wall unless we all pay for a reaseacher.
Thomas army number is RA/23756.
I noticed the Brady name is listed in your replys, is this a name you are interested in as we have a Brady connection, I will send the small amount of information I have if you req.

Re: Irish ancestors
In case you do go the pro-researcher route the National Archives of Ireland keep a list of researchers online, but of course they don't recommend anyone in particular. I have used a pro twice; once in Dublin and once in Limerick. Each time the results were worth the money.. about £100 each time.I think you are right this will be a brick wall unless we all pay for a reaseacher.

Re the Brady [+ Moon] in my names... Thank you for noticing.... This is a tree not connected by bloodline but to 3 foster siblings who meant a lot to me and I am in regular contact with descendants in the US. The 'Brady bunch' were from Liverpool back to around 1835 and before that from Ireland. Arthur Sidney B was bn 13/09/1881, parents Michael and Jane [nee Stewart] bn Liverpool 1848 and 1850 respectively. Michael's parents were Michael and Bridget bn Ireland abt 1801 and 1798 respectively. Arthur Sidney Brady was in the MN and married Gladys Moon from Bristol [Moon family was from Cornwall]. It is their children who eventually became part of my parents' family following the deaths of Arthur and Gladys in 1929 and 1930 respectively.

Re: Irish ancestors
Hi Dickiesam
We may have a match in the Brady family
Ellen Brady born 1831 abode Oriel street, married Adam Blakeley born 1825 abode Leeds street. (a few streets away ) on the 10/11/1851.
Witness's Patrick Rourke and Elizabeth Hewitt.
Their daughter Elizabeth was born 16/04/1853, her baptisim was at St Anthony's ( again only a few streets away ) her godmother was Catherine Brady. Elizabeth died age 2. 9/7/1855 she had bronchitis, and was buried 11/07/55 at St Martin in the fields.
The next child we have listed as there may have been more.
William Henry Blakeley baptisim St Marys 8/5/1856
Ellens husband Adam drowned in the Mersey 25/08/1857 ( I did find 2 newspaper reports on Adams death ) He is buried in Walton park cemetry.
All the interments at St Martin in the fields where later moved to Walton park cemetry, young Elizabeth would have been re-buried near her father.
Ellen remarried John Campbell abt 1865, more on the Campbell family if you need it,
The best match we had for Ellens parents and they lived in a court on Oriel street. the same street Ellen as listed on her marriage certificate. Father Michael Brady born about 1801, mother Bridget Brady born about 1798, Susan born about 1840, Peter born about 1829, Michael born about 1849.
I have misplaced the census I had on this family, and not sure if Ellen was listed, I am taking the information of the family tree.

Correction: Adam your Ellen's parents were probably Michael and Ann not Michael and Bridget. Both these Brady families are on the 1851 Census in Oriel Street. DS Michael Brady and Jane Stewart's RC marriage record is on my Brady page.

That is a lot of information you have on the Brady family. I did take Michael and Bridget from the 1851 census which was in March, and Ellen was married in November. I can not find mine at the moment and unable to magnify yours,
I don't think Ellen was listed with the family , but may have been working in service. I did check all the names in Oriel street at the time and they where the best match, there are other Brady familys in the area, and one with Michael as the head of family.
I will have to start again on the Brady family.
I see you have the Atherton name, in your post , are they a St Helens family as the Athertons are my wifes family name.

Re: Irish ancestors
Michael and Ann Brady in Oriel Street on the 1851 Census have a daughter called Ellen the age is a bit out but it's a good match. My Athertons were in Liverpool from an early date they go back to late 1700s early 1800s in Liverpool.

I've edited the above with the details for the family that are on Ancestry. The birth date on Ancestry for Arthur is different from the one you had posted. Child 2 Michael Joseph Brady is a bit of a mystery I can't find a birth registration or baptism record for him. There were also a couple of daughters that died before they could appear on the Census records.
There's a descendent of Arthur's brother Michael Joseph (born c.1875) on Ancestry. Her grandmother was a daughter of Michael Joseph (born c.1875). The grandmother, her sister and one of her brothers were born in Sweden while Michael Joseph and his wife Susan lived there. He was working for an India Rubber Company. They came back to Liverpool sometime between 1906-08.

Re: Irish ancestors
Hi Blue,
If I recall correctly there were two Arthur Brady births both to a father named Michael.
The other one's father was in the India Rubber business. The one I followed was a gas works stoker.
This is his birth cert with 30th September 1881.
