Hello Everyone
My Wife's Grandmother became an orphan in 1903. Could anyone please tell me how I may find what Orphanage she would be placed in, or indeed what would have possibly happened to her from age 5 to 13. At aged 13 I found her on the 1911 Census living in Binns Rd. as an "Adopted Child"; She lived in the Old Swan area up to 5 years old.
All advice and assistance would be very much appreciated.

Unfortunately without any better clues you could only check all admissions books for all available orphanages when the Record Office is available, however, if she was an "adopted child" in 1911, it may well be that the family, or even another family, may have taken her in rather than have her sent to the workhouse or an orphanage.

Hello Seeker,
I agree with MaryA. It is more likely that the child was 'taken in' by a family and would have been shown as 'adopted' in the 1911. 'Adoptions' were pretty informal back then and the adopting family could have been relatives or even neighbours of the child's parents. I've two such in my family where a child was taken in and raised by a neigbour instead of being packed off to an orphanage.
So, unless you know for certain that the child was placed in an orphanage I would assume the adopted-by-a-family line.

Hello dickiesam
Thanks for that. I think I'll take another look at the 1911 census form. After looking at the Liverpool A to Z, I see streets in the vicinity of Binns Rd. and Old Swan, which may have some connection with the early life of my Wife's Grandmother.

Hi
If she was an orphan in 1903, is it possible she was listed in 1901 census?
Also, if you could list her adopted family from 1911 census, we may be able to find a family link.
Was she an only child?
Cheers
Tina

Hi Tina
Thanks for your reply. In answer,On the 1901 census she is listed with her Auntie(head) her Father and Uncle, all named Glover. The 1911 census she is listed as 13 years old scholar adopted child, still with the name Glover. There is also listed a Family all with the surname Farrell and 2 boarders with 1 surname, Hughes.(Single.) I understand the G.Mother was an only child. Q. How do I find a family link.
On the 1911 census her Auntie is listed as married living elsewhere and her Uncle on the 1911 census is single living elsewhere.
Our concerns are what happened to her in the years between 1903 when her Father died and 1911 when she turns up on the 1911 census.
Thanks for all help

Hello Seeker,
Can you tell us the census page reference for the 1901 household [it will be something like RG13 / Piece: ? / Folio: ? / Page: ?] where you found the child with her father, aunt and uncle? You should also post the child's name and her mother's maiden name. If there is a family connection with the Farrells from 1911, it could be further back than 1901.
We also need the full names and ages of the parents of the Farrell family, occupations, where they were born, how long married and their address in 1911.
We can then backtrack both the Farrells and the Glovers to see if there is a family link. Remember, there is always the possibility that there is no 'blood' link just a 'good neighbours' one. Happened a lot back then.

Hi Crew
This looks like the family in 1901. The Aunt & Uncle are not a married couple, they are bro & sis.
1 Wilton Grove Old Swan
Mary Glover head 20 single rope spinner
brother William 12
brother Thomas 24 looks like M for married? brickies labr
niece Mary 3 yrs all bn Lpool
RG13/3501/167/18
Here's 1891 for Mary snr, sibs, parents
Old Swan
RG12/3000/85/15
We need the full transcript (in a pm to one of us) regarding the census taken between 1910-1912.
If orphan Mary had a middle name of Jane, it's possible her father Thos married Jane Allen in Edge Hill 1897.
There's a death for Jane Glover aged 19yrs in dec qtr 1898.
Guesswork...

Hi Tina
Thanks for the info. I went into BMD and looked for Wm. Farrell and got his marr. details. I then, because you said Hannah's name were Hughes, I got her Dis. Vol.Page details and crossed indexed them with Wm's. and they tallied. The questions are,how did you know her name would be Hughes and that they were married in St. Mary's Wavertree (or should that be Edge Hill)? How will it be possible to find out who and when she were adopted?
This is better than any "Who do you think you are", off the telly!
One again Thank You for all the good work.

Hi Tina,
Could you pop some ages into Wm and Hannah details and their address? I'll try and find them in 1901 and further back. There might be a crossing of trails/addresses where Farrell and or Hughes meet with Glover.

Hi Seeker
I did mention the marriage was in Lancs BMD 1904.
You can search for free.
His name spelt as FARRALL
St Marys was in Wavertree, not Edge Hill.

Hi Tina
Thanks for the help and guidance.

I followed up your lead for the LANCS BMD site (1st time I've used it). As you said the church was St. Mary's WAVERTREE

NOT Edge Hill. But I am no nearer to finding out what happened to the wife's G.mother between 1903 and 1911. Has she been with the Farrells all this time or possibly with Hannah Hughes before she married Farrell? I remember it mentioned earlier about orphanage's admission books.Do I have to wait until LRO have moved to Sandhills, or is there another way of accessing these?

I'm afraid they will have been deposited with the Record Office. You will need to enquire whether they will be in Sandhills or World Museum William Brown Street.
