I'm looking for Herbert McIver born May 1894 to Adeline & Arthur McIver of Liverpool. Married Elsie May Crabtree in 1920 and had two sons Frank and Harold. He then drops off the radar until 1970 when he reappears in Anglesey to marry long time partner Mary Florence Makeating (who he ran off with poss around 1939). Suggestions that he might have lived in IOM at some point in the 60's but nothing concrete, possibily lived in Menai Bridge, Anglesey too as that's where they married age 74 ! I cannot find any death records for either Herbert or Mary, nor can I find any children that they may have had.

Have tried all avenues I can think of, any suggestions of where I might look next would be greatly appreciated !

Regards

Kit McIver (Montrose)

The only thing I could find was the death of Elsie May McIver in 1970. Presumably he left with the 'other woman' after that. Don't know if it would be worth getting Elsie's death certificate - it might give an address and would tell you if he registered the death or not.

I've got all certs he disappeared in late 20's early 30's as he left when his son's were around age 10 but that's only hearsay. I found the marriage of Herbert and his lady by accident !

Thanks for your resonse anyway - much appreciated

I too have searched the BMD's and found the marriage you mentioned in Anglesey District.

I can only suggest that you try and check emigrations, although at that date flights were becoming more popular and it would be no use to rely on ships passenger lists.

It looks like they married as soon as his first wife died.
They must have had contact with family to learn of her death.
Imagine getting married at 74 yrs of age after being "man and wife" for so many years.

Hello Kit,
Because the following refers to people who are possibly still living I have sent you the 'fine detail' via a PM.

There appears to be the marriage of one of his sons in Sep qtr 1948. Can't find one for Harold.

Found only one birth to the above marriage.. Liverpool South - 1950 - Dec qtr - 10D - 927.
Update: This birth is Kit's father!

Thought you might get an insight into g.father Herbert's 'history' from the above child if you can find where he/she is today. I had a quick look on Tracesmart [electoral rolls searches 2000 to 2010] http://www.tracesmart.co.uk/ and found 3 possibles on Merseyside alone. It's a pay site so credits would be needed to check for more, and get details of other people in the households. You could also check for a marriage from the info in the PM.

Hi Kit,
Can't find a hint of a death in England, Wales or Scotland for either Herbert or Mary from 1970 to 2005 when they would have been a hundred years old. Neither were they in the Overseas Deaths indexes.

As you had mentioned a possible connection with the Isle of Man, it is possible a search of the Registry there would give a hit or two. If they are not there I would be thinking they had emigrated to either Ireland, the Republic more so than the North because of the ongoing 'troubles' at that time, or had Herbert acquired another nationality and passport in the intervening years?

One of the knowledgeable crew here must know the best way to access 'recent' IoM BMDs.

Also, in case Herbert and Mary had been together in her childbearing years, I checked for McIver and Makeating births without any hits.

Thanks for all your help and comments. we have distant cousins in IoM so they have kindly offered to have a look to see if it's worth me travelling there. however I do enjoy a wee jaunt so I wouldn't be too annoyed to get there and find no records ! but I sincerely hope there are !

Let us know how you get on in Douglas. Or as my teenage g.daughter would no doubt say.. "Keep me [and the crew] in the loop"!

My searches went along similar lines to Dickiesams, I did find an IoM site with BMD's but not up to date enough to be of any use in this search.

I hope you get lucky with direct research on the island, it does sound like a possibility.
