I remember there used to be a link on this site to a website where you could search some of the main Newspapers from the 19 century free. Can anyone tell me if the site is still on the go and if it is still free to use.

The site is available through some public library services, though not Liverpool. Lancashire County Libraries allow you register as a reader online and so get free access that way. The newspapers after 1900 are not available.
The only Liverpool paper I have found is the Mercury.

John, that site would be similar but with a subscription.

You need to check with your library if they allow access to the Gale Group site of old newspapers, many of them do, I think Chester and quite a number in Lancashire also.

I'm sure that was the site, but did it not used to be free to use it on-line?

As advised by Daggers and myself, you now need to join a library that gives access to it.

Just wondering if this is about one of yours,
Upon a visit to Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool, I 'transcribed' this headstone: In Affectionate Remembrance of Ellen, Wife of John Forshaw of Everton, who died December 29th. 1870, Aged 64 years. On whose soul sweet Jesus have mercy. Also the above John Forshaw, who departed this life August 8th. 1881, Aged 76 years. R.I.P.

Quite interesting lots of different bits of info,where street names come from,marriages from news papers, i am still working my way through it.

Hi Debbie, is there a reason you are looking for the papers, are you looking for a time frame,the link above as extracts from the Mercury.

Thanks also for the Forshaw grave, I don't believe it is mine directly, but I believe I know somebody it might be and I will pass the details on. I appreciate your help.
