Another Courtliff puzzle

Hi folks

With constant visits to Anc* thought I'd sorted out my 19th century people - and then lo and behold doesn't it throw a curved ball my way.

Just received a marriage cert for John Cortliff (transcribed as Corttliff) and Phebe McCoy

They married 25 June 1851 at Liverpool Parish Church

John Cortliff
Age: Full
Status: Widower
Occ: Bricklayer
Add: Gay Street
Father: John Cortliff, Bricklayer

Phebe McCoy
Age: Full
Status: Spinster
No occ
Add: Birkett Street
Father: John McCoy, Plumber

Witnesses James Dickinson & Eliza Beattie

OK, so having age as Full doesn't help BUT fitting this info into the family tree I'm almost positive this is John born about 1823 who married Mary Thomas in April 1854 (he was a widower and she a spinster).

John's 1st two children were born in 1843 (John) & 1845 (Ellen) the rest (5) were born after 1855.

Help needed as follows -
Who is Phebe McCoy and when did she die
Who is John's 1st wife and mother of John & Ellen
Is/was Liverpool Parish Church St Peter's or St Nick's

A lot to take in I know but any help would be so welcome

Thank you

Lesley

The Parish CHurch would be St Peters which was in Church Street

Our Lady and St Nicholas has been the Parish Church of Liverpool since 1916, before which it was St Peter’s which stood in Church Street and was demolished in 1922.

You could purchase the birth certificate for either John and Ellen which would give the mother's maiden name.

Do you have John (father) in the 1841 census?

Hi Hilary

Can't find birth details of John & Ellen so have taken approx birth years from their marriage certs

As for 1841 - nothing up to now and I've tried as many variations as I can think of.

Over the years the name has been spelt so many different ways and even appears as Porter in 1891 but that's another story!! Just not sure where to try next

Thanks Mary & Katie for church info
